Apocalyptic blizzard of 2013

I woke up at 5:30am and sprung out of bed to check on the blizzard!

We got several inches of snow since we went to sleep last night and it has blown around nicely. Like a snowstorm of my youth.

There are some wind gusts, but nothing of much significance yet. This storm is supposed to carry into tomorrow. YEE HA

I was watching CNN for hours last night. It was even MORE amusing that hurricane reporting! It was apocalyptic! The WORLD was ending for tens of millions of people because it was SNOWING! Reporters on the beach, reporters on the street, reporters driving around in snow. One reporter stood beside a stuck pickup truck and walked around him, reporting on the truck spinning its tires. Not one effort to help the poor guy out.

For HOURS CNN reported on only TWO stories. The snow and the manhunt for the ex-cop in California. Nothing else was covered. How is CNN a news channel?

Almost everything is closed in our province today. Yesterday the groceries stores were as busy as the day before Christmas. Everyone wants storm food.

The power is already out to many people (6697 customers out) down near Yarmouth where the storm first hit. I would prefer if we don’t lose power, but I’m ready!

If we have power, I’ll keep updating this post throughout the day.

6am - Blizzard 2013

6am – Blizzard 2013

6:09am – Plow went by!

7:04am – Getting lighter outside, sun is rising. I’ve got the fire made in the woodstove and put the dishwasher on early in case we lose power. Not too windy yet. Blowing snow, reduced visibility. First birds of the day showing up at the feeders. -8°C

7:04 am

7:32am – The list of What’s Closed or Cancelled Today includes: Canadian Tire, Home Hardware, Aulds Cove Tim Hortons, most pharmacies, the dumps, the libraries, mall opening at noon (maybe), the rec centres, and bingo is cancelled all over for today. Maritime Buses aren’t running either. The Nova Scotia Jeep Club has been called in in Halifax to drive people to and from the hospital if needed.

8:06am – Lots of birds here now, red polls, evening grosbeaks, chickadees, and juncos. Nothing much else going on. Jeff still in bed. I’m getting sleepy. The odd wind gust, but nothing major. One car just went by.

blizzard2013c

8:05am

9:44am – Went back to bed for a nap. We’re both up now. I just shovelled a shovel-width path on the porch. It’s over a foot of power snow, but not light powder, just not packing snow. Jeff is thinking about plowing to keep it under control. The ATV can only do so much. I might have to clean off the window my webcam is in before you can’t see anything! 5027 customers without power in the province. -4.5°C

blizzard2013d

9:47am

10:48am - Jeff is still plowing. I cleaned the vehicles and moved them around so he could plow. Jeff saw a big white bunny in the ditch when he was plowing – scared him away. We haven’t spotted a rabbit in months!

Just saw on Twitter that the historic waterfront in Shelburne, NS is under water. Photo here and Another One and One more. Waist deep water in some places, water over roads. Here is flooding in Liverpool More businesses closed around here, liquor stores, Sears, grocery stores, car dealerships, pizza restaurants.

Here’s a photo gallery of flooding photos from Shelbourne County.

11:20am – Jeff’s still plowing. 7990 customers without power. Snowing just lightly here now and the winds aren’t too bad. Road seems plowed, but I don’t think we’ve seen half a dozen vehicles today go by. Storm surge that hit the south shore of the province was 1-2 metres. It is receding now. Wait, there goes the snowplow again right now. They weren’t keeping up this much on Monday. Must be overtime on Saturday :-) Transport truck off the road near Antigonish – photo. Here’s a photo from Lockeport, NS where the water is up to cars in their driveways.

12:07pm – 21,701 customers suddenly without power. Still on the western side of the province. Heading this way.

1:08pm – Just saw on Twitter that the storm surge in Shelbourne, NS was the biggest they’ve seen in that area since a Groundhog Day storm in 1976. Nothing of significance to report here. Power restored for some. Down to 13, 241 customers without.

2:23pm – Is this storm a bust? Very light snow, almost rain, no wind. CBC is reporting 17cm of snow at Yarmouth airport, 44 at Greenwood airport, 21cm at Halifax airport and 5cm at the Sydney airport so far. Hard to believe everything is closed when the road is plowed and it hasn’t really snowed since early this morning here.

2:54pm – Freezing rain. Light. Yet the car and truck windows are covered in ice. Red squirrel just showed up under at the bird feeder.

9:03pm – FINALLY the freezing rain has turned back to snow! It will take awhile to chisel the windows free from ice tomorrow. Not too much wind.

8:54 am Sunday – The wind picked up around 10pm and it not let up! I wouldn’t want to be driving anywhere today! Still snowing. Blizzard warning still in effect.

blizzard2013e

9:05am Sunday

3:41pm Sunday – Still snowing and blowing. Jeff wants to plow, but there is still so much snow coming down. At some point I’ll have to go chisel out the car and truck because there is a lot of ice build up from on the freezing rain under the snow. Blizzard warning has been replaced with a blowing snow warning. I wouldn’t want to drive anywhere today, everything is a white out.

5:38pm Sunday – Funny there is no blizzard warning anymore, it is closest to a blizzard this afternoon than it has been since Friday. We just spent a couple hours plowing, shovelling, thawing and moving the cars.

8:39pm Sunday – Storm is over! More photos coming in a new post soon.

First time I ever blogged on January 31

Turns out I never have anything to say on January 31. I have a little widget in the sidebar that displays what I have posted on this day in previous years and today it is blank! Next year I will appreciate this post.

Not much new.  We’re in the midst of a wild hurricane-like weather spell.  It was +12 today and raining with 100km/hr wind gusts. It has been -20 at times this month and the ground was frozen.  Yesterday when the temperature shot up to 0 it was ridiculously slippery outside in the rain. The rain was freezing quickly on concrete and I walked across campus to and from a meeting by shuffling my feet and grabbing railings wherever possible. The asphalt wasn’t quite as bad. Luckily I followed a salt truck most of the way home.

The faculty at the university were I work are on strike this week.  I went out at lunch today to carry my union’s flag and walk their line. They seem very strong and determined to have their voice heard.  Meanwhile the students numbers on campus have quickly dwindled. Campus is eerily quiet with no classes.  One coworker said it felt like the twilight zone.  My union is in conciliation with our employer now so hopefully we reach a successful conclusion shortly or we will also be on the picket line.

Hmmm. In retrospect, maybe I should have left today vacant.  I’m rather uninspiring.  The internet is painfully slow and disrupted tonight. Time to go offline.  Jeff’s watching Duck Commander. I think I will join him. Ta ta

Cost of watching the big waves today? A $12 car wash

This morning felt like a great day to kick start the weekend with a truck stop breakfast.

We drove to Aulds Cove, just before the causeway to Cape Breton Island, and waited in line for 15 minutes or so for a table (everyone else had the same idea this morning).

The waves were huge on the Northumberland Strait today with the gust north wind. There have been whales reported on that side of the causeway most of the summer, but we knew we wouldn’t be able to spot them once we saw the size of the waves.

We drove over the causeway after breakfast and the waves were smashing over the causeway!  We got the camera ready for the trip back across but the waves didn’t smash as big as on the way over.

See how wet the road is? There is gravel tossed all over the road too.

Yikes! Look at all the salt on the truck! See it on the window!?

We took a few back roads to see if we could get closer to the waves.

The waves were incredible!  I decided to get out of the truck anyway. First I stayed by the truck to see how far the waves were crashing onto the road.

Then I said, I’m going closer!

Still pictures can’t quite describe the power of these waves, or the strength of the wind! I almost blew backwards once!

The weather is never disappointing here

Evidence that the weather here never disappoints:

  • It started to snow heavy last evening and quickly we had a few inches everywhere.
  • Jeff plowed the driveway at 4am while I shoveled the deck and cleaned off our vehicles so he could get to the airport. It started to lightly rain while we were outside.
  • During my work day it warmed up, much of the snow melted, and the fog grew thick. People on the news tonight were saying it is the thickest fog they’ve ever seen. Now I heard the east coast folk knew fog, but this certainly isn’t the thickest fog I’ve ever seen, but it IS ominous at any rate.
  • Tonight the entire province of Nova Scotia has a wind warning. Gusts of 100 km/hr are supposedly on the way, even though it is completely calm out there now at 7:10pm
  • There may be thunderstorms over night.
  • By Sunday it will be -12°C

Awesome!

Jeff is in Ontario. I will be having a quiet weekend at home. I’ve got many things to do, and hopefully one of them won’t be chasing the roof in the wind tonight.

Monty is pining away at the door for Jeff. He thinks Jeff should be home by now. He is usually a little extra whiny for the first day or two after Jeff leaves.

Another weather bomb

The media is calling today’s storm a weather bomb – apparently because of the drastic pressure change in the storm.

We’re east of the heavy snow and it’s pouring rain here and the wind is supposed to gust to 100 km/hr here, and 110 km/hr over in PEI. It was 14°C this morning and is supposed to drop to 4 by this afternoon.

There are already 11,077 customers without power in the province.

I’m not expecting the need to do an hour by hour update, because it is just wind and rain, but if something exciting happens, I’ll update!

OK Update already,
I noticed you can see the white caps on our lake on my webcam – http://lisaschuyler.com/webcam/

12:47pm Another update. PEI is cut off from the rest of the world! Well at least to traffic. Ferries are stopped and the Confederation Bridge is closed to traffic. Schools are sending kids home because the power is out. (Why can’t they have school without power?) >23K customers without power now. Heavy rain seems to be over. Just windy here.

Next day update:

Worst part of the storm was having no internet all evening! The power was out closer to town, so one of the wireless internet towers in our network chain was down so I had to go without! At least I had power and TV.

Another wild day in Nova Scotia

Decent storm we’re having today!

Big winds, wet rain, and warm tropical air.

We’re we both up before 5am. Must have been the wind. I fell asleep again for awhile, but it is only 11:11 (hey look at that! I just looked at 11:11 on 11/11/11 !) and it feel like 3pm.

CAMWIZ_11-NOV-11_11-12-18-95 [SHOOT]

The winds are making our walls and roof creak and crack, but not to the extent of a real tropical storm when the pressure changes threaten to blow out the windows.

Over 8,000 customers are without power in the province right now. I’m sure that will keep growing with these gusts. Our’s flicked a few times, so we unplugged our newly fixed washing machine so it won’t get any more power surges.

Guess how much it costs to make a blinky blinky F71 flashing error code go away on a two year old Kenmore Elite front loader washing machine? $540. We could have bought 2 used machines for that price. What a sham. At least we can do laundry again.

If there are further storm developments, I’ll come back and update this post.

Update @ 11:25am
10,717 customers without power in Nova Scotia now

Update @ 12:06pm
Power went off briefly. Jeff told me to fill the tub with water so we can flush our toilets later because he’s sure we’re losing power. 11,346 customers without power now. Monty is flipping out. He hates it when the power flicks and everything beeps.

Update @ 12:14pm
Power went out briefly again. Monty is hiding under my desk. 13,460 customers without power now. Mom just sent me photos of all the snow they have in Listowel, ON this morning. Can’t see the grass!

Update @ 3:58pm
Getting really dark and really wild again out there. Raining heavy. Saw on Twitter that Antigonish has already received over 100mm of rain today.

Update @ 4:27pm
Power outages down to 3356 customers.

Update @ 6:02pm
Aww crap. Literally. There is a couple inches of backflow from the septic system in the basement laundry tub just now in the last 20 minutes. Rain is almost done. Radar shows it moving out. Still very windy. Guess the ground is over saturated again.

Weather watching

Just before 10am here and we’re getting rain mixed with ice pellets.
100km/hr winds on the way for later today.

My view at 9:57am

I’m thinking we need to cut our lawn again before winter. Look at that tall messy grass!

Update. 11:50am
Jeff noticed the top run of our eavestroph is clogged up so the water is pouring over the edge. It just had to be the top run, eh? The one that is too high to reach with the ladder? Speaking of which, Jeff found a company that will install a heat cable across the back of that roof where we had that bad ice damn last year, but they want to charge us at least $600 and they want an electrician to install an outlet under the eaves. Ouch. Living in a two-storey house has extra costs when you can’t easily get to your roof.

Update. 1:43pm
Just got a fire started to warm it up a bit in here. It’s a really cold rain and the wind is from the north. The power flicked once. There is flooding in Peggy’s Cove and on the Halifax waterfront.

Update: 6:53pm
Crazy windy here. Power outages all over the province.

Update: 11:03pm
Kept our power! Some good brownouts, but not enough to interrupt Sunday’s Amazing Race or The Walking Dead. It sounds like the wind is dying down now. Now the snow is supposed to start by morning I think.

Next morning:
11,888 customers of Nova Scotia Power are still without power this morning, and we ARE NOT one of them! Woo hoo! We weathered another storm. The rivers are high and swollen this morning. It is +3 this morning and snowing a bit in town. Won’t be long until the studded tires have to go on!

Rain keeps falling, wind is howling, and we’re doing fine

No wonder The Canso Causeway closed last evening – look at this photo!! http://www.cbc.ca/gfx/images/news/topstories/2011/10/06/pe-li-storm-canso-causeway.jpg

The storm continues into day 3 today! There is still a wind warning and storm surge warning for Antigonish County.

We weathered the storm fine. Two nights ago the rain was heavy. Jeff was up at 4am making sure our driveway was still intact. Yesterday when I drove into work all the creeks were overflowing and there was a lot of water on the road.

But since then, the rain has kept falling, but not too heavily so the waterways have kept up. Our driveway was already badly eroded so I didn’t notice much of a difference. We’re thinking we might have to have our driveway re-graded, maybe with an extra load or two of gravel, before winter or we’ll never be able to plow it because it is so uneven.

Everything outside is covered in pulverized leaf pieces. All of our tomato pots on the porch blew over, so Monty was able to steal and eat a few more green tomatoes.

Yesterday our neighbour lost a big tree on their front lawn. Across the lake there were a couple of times yesterday we saw a few sets of flashing lights and trucks lined up – hydro trucks I think. Must have been trees down on the service lines.

The ferries to PEI and Newfoundland have been tied up during the storm. Traffic on the bridge to PEI was restricted for awhile too. Winds peaked on the bridge at 131 km/h!

This morning it was only THREE degrees at 7:30 when I headed for work. I had to wait for the defog to clear my front and back windows. Not frost yet – just fog.

We still haven’t turned any heat on in our house. Might have to tonight if the sun doesn’t come out!

UPDATE! 8:39am – Jeff said it was just snowing at our house!

Monty went for another swim, and now we have a Hurricane Irene wind warning

I needed a break from my course today after flunking a quiz with a 44% (don’t worry, we get to re-write them over and over for practice until we get 100% if we want), so we took Monty for another swim down at Lochiel Lake.

Here are some photos:

Jeff was talking to the caretaker of this picnic park earlier in the summer, and she said the lawnmower caught fire while she was cutting the grass!! Here is where it happened. There are still some metal parts in the burn mark:

We now have a wind warning for tomorrow (Sunday) night for 100 km/hr winds with 30-40 mm of rain. Sounds like an average day in Nova Scotia.
