Chicken Squirrel

The red squirrel was just sitting on the porch loudly yelling at the world.

He forgot that was Monty’s domain.

Monty was released from house, and chased that squirrel right up the wall, up on top of the wireless internet antenna.

If he chews through our already pathetic internet connection, I will let Zeus out too. That’ll teach him!

Squirrel Attack Plan A. Sneak up on Target

I was sitting on the porch trying to take photos of the 8 blue jays at the bird feeders, when I suddenly spot this guy out of the side of my eye.

That squirrel sat like that watching me for about 5 minutes without moving. Unfortunately I was giggling at him so loud his plan was foiled again.

Squirrel Attack Plan E.

Yet to be determined. However, judging by the squirrel squealing noise I just heard, I’m going wager a guess that Plan E involved sneaking by large golden dog lying on the back porch who wasn’t as asleep as he appeared.

While I am waiting for the phone to ring…..

I haven’t heard a word about Zeus from the vet. I hope no news is good news.

I haven’t showered or vacuumed or cut the lawn, or anything else that would prevent me from hearing the phone ring.

I just spotted a flicker on the front lawn. I often hear the flicker in the woods around here (they are really loud!) but I rarely spot it. So I switched to the zoom lens, grabbed the cordless phone, and went out to get some photos. Luckily I took a few of the flicker through the window before I went outside because he flew back into the trees.

We started with 2 red squirrels visiting our bird feeder and now we have a whole family of chipmunks visiting too. Here are some of the best shots I took:

The tunnel constructor

Jeff noticed a week or so ago that we seemed to have tunnels exiting the snow banks onto to our driveway, on both sides.

And they were surrounded by many little foot prints.

Want to see who dug the tunnels?

We have at least 2 red squirrels this winter who are eating sunflower seeds from the bird feeder, and who are living in our old shed. Jeff squirrel proofed the shed, but they were smarter and found a way in. Then he didn’t have the heart to re-evict them in the winter.

So they eat the sunflower seeds, and have built a tunnel network in the snow. Of course the tunnels surface right under the bird feeder.

Busy as beavers these red squirrels.

Our critter friends

Here is our chipmunk friend. He stuffs his cheeks until they practically rest on the ground while he’s sucking up more seeds!

Chipmunk

I was up at 5:30 this morning because I was getting eaten alive.. but what I don’t know. I didn’t hear a mosquito but they seemed like mosquito bites. Could have been from no-see’ums. Those little itty bitty bugs pack an itchy wallop when they bite me.

I came downstairs and watched a chipmunk and 3 red squirrels. Momma squirrel started chattering and wouldn’t stop! I wonder what she was saying. Here are a few of her:

The sun actually came out!

It’s been dark and rainy for days.. weeks? And today seemed no different, but around 10:30am the sun started poking through the clouds!

We took out the solar lights Mom got us last summer, and the welcome sign she brought out for Jeff’s birthday, and the Golden Retriever sign the breeders sent us at Christmas, and a few other seasonal decorations.

The sun stayed out so we e headed into town and bought some plants for the hanging planters on the porch. The rest of the gardens around here seem to be stocked full of perennials so we’ll see how they progress this summer (our first summer here).

We came back and started planting the containers. Jeff put together this water hose caddy we found at Canadian Tire. And then it happened…. 213409820934820398423 black flies came out to play. I was trying to plant the plants – and my arms were bleeding, the top of my ear was going numb from the bites and they were sitting on my glasses. It became a race for survival!

Porcupines sure have a real waddle to them as they slowly meander away! I should have taken a video.

This was a pretty little lake between our house and the ocean. We were just exploring back roads.

Signs of spring

The funnest part of a new house isn’t the unpacking – it’s waiting to see what comes up in the gardens in the spring!!

This house has MANY flower gardens. Julie and Jeff worked a day away cleaning out some of them a couple weeks back. I’m so appreciative. Now I have to get my butt in gear and finish the (never-ending) job.

Here are a couple scenes that I took while walking around the yard last night as the sun set:

Our Red Squirrel

We have a love/hate relationship with our red squirrel.

He’s funny to watch. But he drives Monty squirrelly! :) ) Monty goes crazy watching the little bugger. He starts whining and jumps up on the windows and rips across the floors scraping his nails all over.

Yesterday Monty spotted the squirrel on the end of the porch so I let him out and he chased the squirrel across the deck and across the yard. It was fun to watch. :) ) The squirrel retreated to his woodpile beside our shed where he lives.

In no time he was back on the bird feeders eating the suet out of the bird feeder. When we spook him while he’s on the feeder, he takes a big leap, stretches all out, and then flies through the air landing on the bushes like he was doing a big belly flop.

Yesterday Monty was going squirrelly out by the barbeque. Jeff went out to open the barbeque, and the squirrel was staring back at him from inside! They spooked each other and the squirrel ran up into the woods.

He wasn’t gone long though.

Here are some shots of the squirrel as he steals more suet.
