Pictures of our ice dam

I really wish I could have gone back further to get a better photo of our roof ice, but the snow is simply too deep to walk back there. If I dig the snow shoes out of the shed this weekend, I’ll update.

So if you can make it out, you’ll see a thick layer of solid ice on the top of the eavestrough, and back on to the roof. On top of that is snow. There is a spot cleared out where we’ve been tackling it with hot water.

The two holes cut in the soffit are for the Venmar air exchanger that is in our attic. The air outlet has turned the siding dark. I’m wondering if it is from the soot that gets in the air from the woodstove. We need to borrow a pressure washer in the spring so we can make the house look clean again.

The tunnel constructor

Jeff noticed a week or so ago that we seemed to have tunnels exiting the snow banks onto to our driveway, on both sides.

And they were surrounded by many little foot prints.

Want to see who dug the tunnels?

We have at least 2 red squirrels this winter who are eating sunflower seeds from the bird feeder, and who are living in our old shed. Jeff squirrel proofed the shed, but they were smarter and found a way in. Then he didn’t have the heart to re-evict them in the winter.

So they eat the sunflower seeds, and have built a tunnel network in the snow. Of course the tunnels surface right under the bird feeder.

Busy as beavers these red squirrels.

More snow!

More snow today! Jeff had to close his offices at 11am, and after hearing his awful road report, I left for home at lunch.

The road was awful. It was about 0 outside so the snow was soft and the road home with like driving through a milk shake. I met a plow going the other way so for a few kilometres I drove with my left two wheels over the yellow line so I had some traction (unless someone – a car, truck, or the 3 pulp trucks I met were coming towards me, of course!) The speed varied from 30-60 km/hr.

I didn’t make it up the driveway, but Jeff gave it another run and he got it up. Whew.

Here are some pictures I just took – around 7:30pm. It is snowing again! So far there has been no wind so the snow is sitting on all of the trees, but it is supposed to gust up to 80 km/hr overnight!

Here are a few shots without the flash (I really should have dragged the tripod out):

Photos from this week’s snow storm

Well Toronto didn’t get the snow storm, but we did!

Here are some pictures after it stopped snowing:

Monty even started peeing on the deck so he didn’t have to go down into the deep snow!

Jeff plowed 3 times to keep up with the snow!

This isn’t much snow compared to the snow we used to get in Ontario, but it is LOTS of snow for Nova Scotia!

We asked the neighbour to widen our driveway with his tractor and plow. Our 4-wheeler and plow work great, but you can’t push the snow back with it so the driveway got narrower and narrower:

We now have a snow fall warning for tomorrow! And it sounds like that could be just the first of 3 storms coming this week!

This winter is awesome :-)

Shed Progress…. halted by snow

Here are a few pictures of the shed last Sunday:

And this is why no shed building occurred this weekend:

We’ve got at least 8 inches, and it is still snowing. It’s right around zero outside, so the snow is really wet and heavy.

Monty loves it though!

Jeff plowed while I shovelled the heavy snow off the deck.

Birds don’t seem to mind it either, as long as I keep the sunflower seeds coming. We’ve had 9 mourning doves, big fat ones, sitting in the front birch tree, and two red squirrels scavenging underneath the feeder. A few mornings ago, there were two partridge in the front tree when I was heading out to work!

Here are a few more of Monty:

The Plow

The plow wasn’t here in time for the first snow fall, that fell after the ice formed, so our driveway wasn’t so good for a couple days.

But it arrived on Wednesday and we spent Wednesday night outside in the cold assembling the bracket for the plow and then attaching the plow to the quad.

I only had to run back inside to the basement once for a tool that I never heard of (torque wrench). Our battery powered lantern worked so Jeff could see what he was doing.

Here are the first moments of Jeff trying it out.

I am beyond ecstatic about this plow. After these photos we got about 10-15 cm of snow. On top of ice, that would usually put the driveway out of my range for weeks. But we woke up early and Jeff plowed it down to ice and gravel. Then we got a warm spell up to +7 that almost melted the entire driveway. YES!!!

Spring Snowstorm

While many of you are basking in spring in Ontario, we have a snowstorm!

Overnight tonight we have a snowfall warning and a blowing snow warning in effect. Winds are supposed to get up to 70km/hr but so far there is no wind – just a lot of snow! I just stepped outside to quickly shoot a few pictures.

Blizzard Hibernation = Over

Jeff gets really antsy staying home on vacation in the winter with nothing to do so we took a trip into town.

It was a white-knuckle adventure down to the road. There was a layer of ice on the driveway before all the snow fell and it is still really slippery with snow on it (another inch fell this morning). Jeff put it in 4Low and hugged the right tires in the snow bank. He went nice and slow and I think it took 5 minutes to get down to the road, but we did it nice and slow and we didn’t land in the lake. Whewwww.

In town we learned that the snow removal here is incredibly poor. It almost seemed like they just moved as little as possible and are hoping it melts and goes away…. which is likely when it hits +5C on Wednesday and rains.

We noticed that there was a roof that collapsed!! At Central (our small Atlantic Canada version of Home Depot) they have 3 adjoined greenhouses where they keep the gardening supplies and other outdoor things. It is open year round and they have a display of their wood and pellet stoves in there. Well it looks like they didn’t bargain for the weight of the heavy snow that fell on Jan. 1st. Take a look:

Dig out Day!

While Jeff was deciding if he should close his offices today, I went downstairs to see if I had enough coals in the woodstove to start today’s fire (because I ran out of kindling – it’s out in the shed).

Luckily I had lots of hot red coals to catch the logs on fire, but I did have to shovel out the loose ash and coals.

I went to take it outside to the outdoor fireplace where I dump them, but I didn’t get there using my usual route.

Here is the door in our basement walk-out:

I opened the door and saw this:

The snow is way too deep for me to try to get out there!

I carefully carried the ash bucket upstairs and out the side door. The snow to get to the ash dumping place was over my knees the entire way. We don’t have to go anywhere until Monday. Eventually our neighbour Buddy will come and plow us out – if he can! He usually drives his tractor up and plows his way down. Not sure how he’ll do it today!

Webcam is on focused on the top landing of the driveway right now so if Buddy shows up with the tractor, you can watch. :D

I’ll take more photos when the sun comes up all the way.

Most stores and businesses seem to be closed – at least until noon. The hospital has declared a code gray – asking people to only come it there is an emergency. They have asked for anyone with a four-wheel drive on the road to give them a call to help getting their day staff to the hospital.

Yes… it is still snowing…. :D

Update 10:13am. Here are some more photos for you!
