Sorry inanimate objects… I was running late…

Sorry alarm clock, woodstove, sink, tap, dishes, car, ice, wipers, wet pants, socks, shirt, keys, shampoo and every other inanimate object that I growled and grumbled at this morning.

But I was running late.

And the alarm clock came on too quiet so it didn’t wake me up right away, and the shampoo wouldn’t wash out of my hair fast enough, and the fire wouldn’t stay going, oh and today is pink shirt day, and I couldn’t find a pink shirt, and then I found one, and then I tripled my pink with pink underwear and a pair of pink/black/white striped socks (thanks Julie), and then the sink was taking too long to fill with water to put the pork roast in to thaw, and the tap wasn’t big enough to pump out more water, and the dishes were in the way because I didn’t wash them last night, and the car was at the bottom of the driveway because we got a lot of snow yesterday, and the car was ice covered and had to be chiseled, and walking through the snow down to the road got my pants soaked, and my keys were stuck in my pocket on my mittens, oh and then I locked myself out of my running car (but thankfully just the driver’s door was locked), and then I was stuck behind some person in a line of 10+ cars driving 40-50 km/hr all the way to town, when they KNEW I was going to be late…

And I’m sorry to the birds and the squirrels who will go hungry today because the bird seed is in my car and the car didn’t make it to the house. Please don’t starve and die. I’ll fill up your feeders this afternoon.

And I’m sorry Jeff that you are coming home from a work trip to a snow filled driveway and a messy kitchen.

It’s just so hard to go to bed early when I have the TV all to myself and I can watch girly shows.

Sincerely,
Lisa

P.S. Something Borrowed is a great movie.

Travel between Ontario and Nova Scotia can be tricky in winter – at least for us

So last time we travelled to Ontario in the winter, we spent Christmas in a small motel in Quebec with a broken truck and we had to eat Leonard.

Fast forward 4 years, and Jeff found himself working in Burlington last week for work.

He tried to come home on Friday, and the plane got all the way to the Bay of Fundy, but there was too much snow on the Halifax runway, so the plane turned around and took him all the way back to Toronto!

WestJet put him up in a hotel, but they lost his luggage, so he had no clothes, no toothbrush, and nothing to do.

They weren’t able to get him on another flight until Saturday at 5:30pm!

Luckily he made it to Halifax this time, and his luggage was waiting for him at the airport.

He sure was happy to be home!

Vet appointment, bird party, and snow

Monty’s vet appointment went well.

The vet felt the lump and said right away it was a sebaceous cyst. He said he could get rid of it right away for me. Perfect! He got 2 of his helpers to hold Monty down and I held his face and was ready to watch. Then the vet said, you won’t pass out, will you?

Well I don’t think so. But how do I know? OK I’ll look away.

He said it wasn’t a sebaceous cyst because it was all clear fluid (I remember Winger & Surf’s sebaceou cysts were fatty and blood tinged and gooey).

He said it was some sort of cyst but it is gone now. He said the chance of it being something bad is like the chance of him winning the lottery – that there isn’t no chance, but it is very slim.

He said if it comes back, then he’ll just remove it for good and if it was something bad, it would be gone too.

WHEW!!

What a great visit to the vet. He asked about Zeus again and can’t believe he’s fine. He said he wouldn’t give him 6 weeks and I think we’re into month 7 now. Everyone there was all chipper and joyous and full of holiday cheer. I want to work in a place like THAT!

Here are some pictures of the bird party that was here this morning, and of a few more I just took when I was outside wandering in the snow. We’ve had a big flock of Evening Grosbeak’s lately (those big yellow and black birds).

Looks like it’ll be a white Christmas after all!

Monty and I are off to the vet on this snowy Christmas eve eve day

Monty - December 22, 2011

Monty has a vet appointment at 11:15 this morning so we can check out this little growth on his chest. The vet didn’t think it was anything to worry about in May, but now it’s growing and I’m extra worried about lumps and bumps since Winger’s mast cell tumour on his head was dismissed as a sebaceous cyst for years.

So hopefully it is nothing. If the vet wants to remove it, hopefully they can trim Monty’s nails when he is knocked out!! I don’t imagine that would be today, but we’ll see what happens.

He looks a bit like Winger in this pic, eh?

There was no snow when Jeff left for his last day of work this morning before Christmas, but by 8am it was turning white outside!

Hopefully the roads are ok!

November snowstorm = Miserable morning

A foot of REALLY wet snow is outside.

Jeff’s been plowing for 1.5 hours and keeps getting stuck. He just pulled the ATV out with his truck. There is no way I could get my car out right now.

My wonderful boss has closed my building until noon. Classes are cancelled until noon, but apparently staff are still required to report?

It was feeling like it was starting to rain, and now it’s back to snow. The snow is just so thick and heavy the plow can’t budge it once there is a pile of it.

Oh boy!! Talk about the last minute!

I hate hearing studded tires on pavement, but I finally caved yesterday and booked an appointment for tomorrow (Wednesday) to get my tires switched to my winter tires.

Low and behold, guess what else is happening tomorrow?

Warnings
Antigonish County
4:30 AM AST Tuesday 22 November 2011
Snowfall warning for
Antigonish County issued

Snowfall amounts of up to 15 to 30 cm are forecast for Wednesday afternoon and evening.

This is a warning that significant snowfall is expected or occurring in these regions. Monitor weather conditions..Listen for updated statements.

A low pressure system approaching from the Southern United States will move northeast to lie southwest of Nova Scotia by Wednesday evening. A cold airmass over the region will likely result in precipitation beginning as snow for most areas with a changeover to rain for the Atlantic coast. Currently rainfall amounts of up to 40 millimetres are forecast for the Atlantic coast with snowfall amounts of up to 10 to 15 cm further inland. For the Annapolis Valley and northern areas of mainland Nova Scotia snow is forecast giving amounts of up to 20 to 30 cm.

Currently for Cape Breton snowfall amounts are not expected to reach warning criteria, but uncertainties in the storm intensity and track may require further warnings to be issued. There is also a chance that rainfall warnings may be required for Southwestern Nova Scotia along the Atlantic coast.

Big snow storm heading to New England tomorrow

You know how I love storms… And if we can’t get a good October hurricane, a snowstorm will do!

Just imagine the tingles in my weathervane when meteorologist Henry Margusity just said on his weather blog “There is is no doubt in my mind that we are facing one of the worse snow events in decades given the heavy nature of the snow and how early in the season the snow is occurring.”

We are probably too far east to get much snow, but New Brunswick may get up to 30cm.

Can you say “AWESOME!”

Check out the latest on the storm:

Do you have any idea how exciting it is to live here?

We get weather warnings more than once a week!

Hurricanes, tropical storms, wind warnings, snow warning, heavy rain fall warnings, AHHH! I love it.

Why do I get so excited for storms?

I have no idea.

Was it from chasing funnel clouds in the car with my dad as a kid? Was it from all the snow days from growing up in the country? Was it watching Anderson Cooper getting tossed around by the eye wall of a hurricane on CNN?

I’m not sure.

And yes, thank-you, I am easily terrified, so is that why I like storms? Maybe it is just the thrill of the unknown.

Just a few days ago, on Friday, we had a rain fall warning and a wind warning. And it didn’t disappoint! We had pouring rain for at least 10 hours, which turned to snow by morning, and everything froze!! That is when the blowing snow warning was issued!

All the rain that fell is still sitting where it fell, locked in as ice.

There were a couple places on the way in to work this morning that had “Expect Flood Conditions” signs. But it was -21°C so they were completely frozen. The tiretracks in each lane were down to the pavement, but the rest is frozen thick and solid. Huge ice chunks are piled up on the snowbanks – I’m guessing from snowplows banging through after the rain.

Tonight we have a wind warning for 100km/hr!! It’s too bad these winds seem to keep hitting us at night so I can’t watch. Instead I have to just listen to the wail of the wind against the wall and under the eaves of the roof.

Right now it is snowing, but by midnight it is supposed to change to rain, and then hit +5°C by morning.

We’re admittedly a little anxious about the morning. If it is +5, we’ll have solid ice covered in water. And we have a really steep driveway with nothing but a guardrail or a passing pulp truck to stop us from hitting the lake (although it does seem solidly frozen).

I saw a river closer to town that is completely over its banks and has flooded the low lands, but it is currently frozen solid. The neighbouring house has dug big trenches across the 3 feet of snow on their front lawn – perhaps to help drain away tonight’s rain?

Stay tuned.

Oh, and in anticipation, here is what I see right now out my office window, as night falls:

webcam shot

It is hard to make out the falling snow. I’ll update again after dark.

Update:

Wind is picking up and the snow is freezing to the window.

Update #2:

Oh yeah! This storm isn’t disappointing! Currently we’re getting heavy wet snow, at least 2 inches and counting!

Update #3:
Morning! We slept through the whole thing! It looks like there was quite a bit of rain before we woke up. Now it is quickly freezing solid. Jeff plowed away the snow on top of the ice. The road into town was covered in thick frozen slush. A bobcat ran across the road in front of me on the way in too! Neat, eh?

Update on our Ice Dam

We’ve gone about a week now without any water dripping into our house

(Whew!)

But we have had rain and snow this week so any progress we made on eliminating the ice dam seems to have redeveloped.

Can you see the thick layer of solid ice?

ice dam update

Today was GORGEOUS! I’d say it was our first taste of spring. The sky was clear and the sun was bright. The air was still about -1°C but the icicles were dripping!

Monty and I went out in the yard after I got home from work to check out the icicles. It is hard to walk around back there in the deep snow!

Right now we have a Rainfall warning for 50mm before Saturday morning. Will this bust up our ice dam? Or will it bust up our ceilings? Stay tuned…
