Another Nice Weekend

Highlights of the past weekend:

=> J. took me out for a nice dinner on Friday night. We attempted to go to the Buttermilk ski hill north of town where they have a fish fry on Friday nights. I still think we crashed a private party. There were many people there, but still several open long banquet tables. J. got the attention of a wait staff member and she left and came back and said they weren’t able to serve us, with no explanation. Fine. Last time I’ll go there. So we went back to town and ate at Amici’s. It’s an odd restaurant that is very noisy, but the food was good and the beer was good too :D

=> We took a nice drive to St. Joseph’s Island and visited some touristy shops and had a nice lunch near the Hilton Beach waterfront

=> Monty got out to the retriever club for some water retrieves. The leeches are out in full force. He didn’t get any on him luckily. Usually I don’t take the dogs there much past August because the water gets skunky. This weekend is our big International Retriever Trial so it’ll be a busy weekend.

=> J. smoked a big pork butt roast that is really yummy and which will feed us for days.

Garden is Planted, Bring on the Blooms

I bought my flowers and planted my flower garden on Saturday. Now the trick is to keep the dogs out of it! I am trying some new flowering plants this year that I hadn’t bought before so we’ll see how it turns out. I am going for lots of vibrant colours and flowers.

I went to Walmart first to see their selection of plants. It was disgusting. They had so many completely dead, brown, burnt to a crisp plants still on display and for sale! I refused to buy a thing and I went down the road to Canadian Tire. They were sooo busy there, and it rang up to $51 (ouch) but the plants seem healthy.

Monty is progressing on his water retrieves. He can retrieve pigeons and ducks now in the water, and his marking isn’t too bad. He will retrieve it to the shoreline, or my hand if I’m lucky. Unfortunately his land retrieves are horrendous – well not so much his retrieve, but his desire to bring it back. The little mischievous bugger would rather run around with the pigeon in his mouth, trying to initiate a game of “catch me if you can”. It’s sooooo frustrating. It is next to impossible to catch him. By chasing him, I’m just making the game more fun for him. I was yelling and screaming at him and trying to throw my leash in a loop to catch his neck, but it just made me look like a hot head. I think someone else eventually snagged his collar. I think he’s an incredibly bright puppy and I hope we can compete in many activities together, but this running away thing is really getting under my skin. Even to get him out of his kennel run, I have to stand there for 5+ minutes getting eaten alive until he’s tired of running around me and will sit so I can attach his leash. If I have a cookie in my hand, he’ll come instantly – however I don’t want to bring food out to his retrieving practices because he needs to be focused on the retrieve, not food. Argh…. Damn good thing he’s cute.

Monty is outgrowing Surf’s kennel. It’s not tall enough for him, so I guess he’s bigger than Surf was already! Winger’s crate is a great size for him, but it’s in my bedroom where he sleeps (on a side note – it’s interesting how fast he learns words. If I say “bed time” he runs and hides like a 5 year old kid would)

Anyway, J. and I took a trip across the river to check out the prices of new crates/kennels at the TSC store. Their prices are about a half of anywhere else. We’re debating buying two of the plastic vari-kennel types thinking we can put them both side by side still in the back of J.’s truck for our outtings and to go to retriever practices. The plastic type likely won’t have the circulation the wire ones do, so we’ll pick up a couple battery powered fans that clip onto the front door of these crates.

I have this coming Friday off and we’re finally going on our long awaited vacation to Cabela’s hunting and fishing megastore in Dundee, Michigan. I’m really excited to have a vacation. Monty has a reservation at the kennel. I think his suitcase will be bigger than mine when I pack more than enough toys and treats for the little rascal.

Cabela’s is supposed to have big aquariums and a taxidermy mountain or some such thing full of dead stuffed animals so I’ll be sure to shop with my camera so I can share the experience :-) J. has asked me to suggest other things we can do on our mini-vacation so we aren’t just working on his hunting and fishing shopping list. I’ve had lots of fun over the last few days suggesting things like quilting shows, hours of Sarah McLachlan Cd’s for the trip, sunset romantic walks, and many more things like that. Heheheeee teasing is fun. He better not call my bluff because I don’t want to listen to Sarah McLachlan. Many of the touristy things I’ve dug up in Michigan would require more time and a separate trip. Really, I’m not picky, I just excited to go. As long as he leaves his REM cd at home – I hate REM.

Julie & Brian – I am pretty sure I heard you guys were getting together a couple weekends back, but neither of you have blogged about it. Did you do anything fun or just sit in Julie’s bare apartment (she’s been moving stuff back to Mom’s for awhile).

EDIT: Julie blogged for me! – http://www.xanga.com/julieverkley

Monty Learned how to Swim Today!!!

I feel like such a proud momma – my little puppy boy learned how to swim today!!

I didn’t even have to get in the water – he wanted the bumper so bad that he finally just swam out and got it!! No half drowning episodes, no splashing around – he just swam! OHHH I was so excited and proud!!

You can see a few pics here:

Here’s a tease:

He looks a lot like Surf when he’s swimming, eh?

The Week in Review

Good Saturday morning to you all!

I just got my first “The bank has requested that you retrieve the card from the card holder – it may be a lost or stolen card.” when I tried to put through a credit card charge for a customer I’ve had for awhile. I obviously don’t have the credit card in my hand because I do most of my business online, so there is nothing I can do except to let the customer know his charge didn’t go through.

Earlier this week I went to the club property with J., his dog, and Monty. The goal was to get Monty to learn how to swim. He loves the water but as much as he wanted to get the bumpers, he just wasn’t ready to let his feet leave the ground. I read in one of my retriever books that the proper way to teach him is to go out into the water myself and coax him to come to me (obviously with hip waders or something because it’s cold!!).

Bringing Monty out there isn’t a ton of fun for me yet. I spent so much time with Winger and Surf there. It was only the second time I’d been out there since I scattered each of their ashes there. It’s the special place where I hold so many memories with them, and it’s their graveyard all at the same time. I walked around the pond for the first time without them. It was very sad. I used to go out there after work with them all the time. They were never happier. I kept turning around and expected to see them chasing each other along side of me, and then diving back in to swim like they always did. Going out there makes me feel so close to them, and so close to the pain of losing them at the same time. Hopefully it will stop feeling quite so raw at some point so I can enjoy it out there with Monty more. And it probably won’t be a good thing to break out in tears when we start training with the club there. I hear at some point this heart ache is supposed to lessen and I won’t miss them so damn much.

Here are some pictures of Monty in the water, but not quite swimming yet:

Monty was so full of little burrs when we got home that I had to give him a bath and a comb through. He was so sleepy looking:

My day job went okay this week. I made a VB.NET breakthrough and got some pesky little things in my script working properly.. finally! Two of my old bosses have work they need me to do, but don’t have money. I think my chances of a full-time job there become slimmer every day. As does my desire for a full time job there.

I continue to ramp up things with my own business. While I dream of winning the PayDay lottery so I can replace my salary and start working at home full time didn’t come true this week, there is always next week. I did win another $5 on last night’s big Super 7 draw. Maybe one of my favourite friends or relatives won the big one and will shower me with kindness. :-) :-)

Let’s see, what else did this week have to offer. Gilmore Girls is wrapping up it’s season – season finale next Tuesday. Don’t miss it! J. cooked some fantastic steaks this week. Spending more money really gets you a much much much better hunk of meat. I can’t let myself buy anymore cheap steaks. Not now that I’ve tasted the good life.

Well I may add more later, but for now I need to go play with my whining puppy. Or convince him to go back to sleep so I can too ;-)

Girls Night In

Ahhh Girls Night In.. Or I guess that is just Girl.

J. is out with the men tonight. I just had my first bath in my bathroom since it got remodelled. I love love love love my bathroom. It couldn’t be any better. I think bathrooms should always be wood. It’s so warm and cozy. I had a nice bath with my lemon verbena candle on, a drink on the side, and Zeus on the toilet watching the flickering candle up high.. ahhh.. so relaxing.

Of course then I spilled the candle wax all over the new glass shelves and on the top of the toilet tank, but that was easy enough to clean up!

Just a tip I wanted to mention. I always bought bathmats at Walmart. This time we happened to be in Sears and they were 40% off, but still way more than Walmart, but to save a trip I bought them there. The difference is really remarkable. The Walmart bathmats are much much thinner and look like they need washing all the time. This one from Sears is so much thicker. Two thumbs up Sears!

In fact, people have been mentioning to me for awhile that Walmart was really getting a lot of cheap merchandise in. I’m such a Walmart faithful I didn’t really notice, until I was looking for bathroom accessories last weekend. The quality was really cheap. Of course the prices were cheaper too. Maybe I’m just growing out of the cheap-will-do student phase of my life. Eee gads! My tastes sure are changing.

So if you notice I’ve started my Lisa’s Honda Element Fund. (You can donate on the right hand side of this page if you are so inclined – by PayPal or Credit Card). I have a big glass vase that my fish Morris used to live in before he was upgraded to a full aquarium. This is where the Lisa’s Honda Element Fund is now. So far it contains 50 cents. At this rate my great-grandchildren will enjoy their Honda Element. hehe. No worries, I had a fantastic idea for a new website, and I’ve already built half of it this evening. I’ll show it to you soon. It should bring in some easy money.

OH, and I should mention, my contract is going to be extended. It was done at the end of March. It looks like I should be good through to the end of November. That is good news!

Alrighty, off to enjoy my evening. Tomorrow morning I’m meeting the guys from the retriever club so Monty can have his first retrieving outing. There are a couple of other puppies in the club so it’ll be good for him to socialize after our training session.

Late Afternoon Swim

I took Winger and Surf out to the Retriever Club property for a swim late this afternoon. I don’t think anything could make these two dogs happier. I took 91 photos. My digital camera is the best purchase I’ve ever made. Here is a picture of Winger. I’ll check back and update with a link when I post a page of the best pictures from today.

Algoma Retriever Trials

The Algoma Retriever Trials were this weekend. I’m exhausted and sunburnt. As a club member, my job is to drive around between the test sites and deliver lunches and drinks and snacks to the gunners, judges, marshals, and club members. On Saturday night, I put on the tailgate, and cook 100 Italian sausages on buns for all the weekend’s participants (except the dogs). Herc helped me all weekend.

Here are four photos from today. It was very rainy and foggy today. Somehow I still re-burned my face. Very very few bugs out this weekend.

Long Weekend

My long weekend has started! FOUR days off! Well not really off, I’m volunteering all weekend. Every August long weekend our Algoma Retriever Club runs a weekend long North American field trial. Hopefully I’ll be able to get some great photos to share the scene with you all!

AND also good news, it rained almost all day! POURED some too! Ahhh it’s fantastic. I haven’t had to cut the grass yet during the month of July. Even with this rain, I bet it doesn’t green up until August :-)

Report in with your weekend plans! And enjoy them!

First Swim

The snow is almost gone, the temperature was at least 15 degrees Celcius out, it was time to take a venture out to our Retriever Club’s property to let the dogs run and swim today.

Of course my Kodak Easyshare Z740 came with us! There isn’t any plants growing out there yet so my Golden Retrievers blended in really well with dead grass so it really wasn’t a day for spectacular photography.

Here are a couple funny ones of Winger who moved at the last second as I took the shot.

Although I’ve been loving this early spring weather, it’s been so warm and dry, we really need rain. Our city already has a ban on outdoor fires, and with the last traces of snow leaving the bush, we are in for a spring fire ban if it doesn’t rain soon!

Here are a few more photos:

Golden Retrievers have a habit of bringing back half the outdoors with them. Their coats were so full of sticks and mud that I had to bath them. They are both curled up on their dog beds sleeping and shivering off the dampness.
