It is expensive to live in Nova Scotia

It is so expensive to live in Nova Scotia.

The real estate is the only thing that is probably cheaper than Ontario. [Except that if you want to sell, expect it to be on the market for 1-3 years (at least around here).]

Everything else hurts.

We pay fists full… no make that wheelbarrows full… of cash to the provincial government (so they can waste it on nonsense like consulting; reports; convention centres and stadiums for Halifax; apartments, generators, camneras, laptops, art work, fancy office equipment for our MLA’s; bonuses for our provincial civil service workers; and industry handouts, and more industry handouts. It seems that every week there is news of another business closing its doors… after its government money train ran out).

Here are the bills we’re looking at right now.

License Plate Stickers (good for 2 years):
My car – $162.30
Jeff’s truck – $203.40 (more for a truck… because why? Sticker is the same size!)
This is a total tax grab – what value do we get for a license sticker? What are you paying in Ontario now?

Vehicle Safety Inspection:
In Ontario, when you want to sell a vehicle, you have to do a full safety inspection. We have to do that every 2 year here (was every year, but it just changed). We don’t have to do emissions tests, but everything else. And no one would give us any sort of guidelines/rules. You are completely in the hands of the mechanic, and how much he wants to replace.
Jeff’s truck is due for his inspection before the end of September. Right now it is looking like it will be $1500. He needs a ball joint, a new windshield, some rust holes fixed on his rocker panels, and new hinges for his tailgate. His truck is a 2001 and it seems like we’ve possibly been paying enough for it in the last couple of years that we could have been making payments on a newer used truck. When is it time to let it go?

We also have to have bi-annual inspections and vehicle stickers for the boat trailer and for the 4-wheeler. Luckily they aren’t all due at the same time.

Business License:
Here you have to pay to renew your business every year. I have a small business (web design, computer stuff) so I owe another $62.89 by the end of the month.

So far does any of this money give us any sort of value?

I’ve already mentioned many times how the food here is VERY expensive, far more than even Halifax, WAY more than even Northern Ontario.

Our HST is 15% so we pay 15% of everything we buy to our provincial government. FOR WHAT? Most roads around here are barely paved anymore. They might as well be gravel – they’d be smoother.

Property taxes – we pay $1600? I think a year. We live in an unorganized community with no bi-laws. That is a lot of money for a snow plow and garbage pick-up.

Gas is more expensive here, even more expensive than the other Maritime provinces. I was in PEI last weekend. Gas was 9 cents cheaper in PEI, and 4 cents cheaper in New Brunswick. All are regulated and set once a week by the government. (At least we don’t have ethanol in our gas.)

We pay a $0.05 tax on every pop can or bottle (and juice and bottled water). We pay a $0.10 deposit and only get $0.05 back when we bring it to the depot. Speaking of which, the only depot to drop off our cans and bottles here is a 5 minute drive out of town. Why are we paying for this recycling? The recycled product is SOLD isn’t it? If you buy a bottled water with your lunch at a place like Tim Horton’s, you are paying an extra ten cents, and then you likely leave the bottle behind in their recycling box. Bye bye extra ten cents. And do you think Tim Horton’s paid ten cents on every bottle when they came in a truck from an out-of-province warehouse? I don’t either. Oh, and speaking of Tim Horton’s – I’m not a coffee drinker, but Dad tells me our prices are higher here for coffee than in Ontario too.

So this is a bit of a rant. But we have two people living in our house who are both employed full time. How does everyone else around here survive? Jobs paying more than minimum wage are so scarce. Add in insurance (sounds like many people don’t have house insurance after their house is paid off), hydro (rates up 36% here in the last decade), extras like cable/satellite TV, internet, phone or cell phone bill. I work with people who work full time and make less than $30,000/yr. They must live on credit. Even Dad and I who both have an iPhone with Bell – he pays less in Ontario and has package twice as good as mine (he has twice the data, and has a fav 10 list, where I have only a fav 5).

It seems to me that Nova Scotia could charge extra tax on everything, because people here have been raised in a Catholic community where they traditionally do what they are told, and pay what they are told. I never see any sort of lash back, or protest, and most people around here have never lived anywhere else so they have nothing to compare it to.

There has never been a better time to grow your own food, barter with neighbours, and cut back!

(And by the way, WAY TO GO to British Columbia for telling their government to take their HST and SHOVE IT!)

Catching Up

Blogging has been sparse while I am restoring all my files on my new hard drive. The process is nearing completion…

Updates:
-Monty is now a Canadian Champion! We were at dog shows all weekend in Trenton and he did well.
-I haven’t seen the cat or its kitties for almost 2 weeks. I don’t know what happened to them.
-our new wood stove is now installed! We haven’t had time to do a test burn yet – by the weekend we’re supposed to have 5-6 °C at night so maybe we’ll fire it up!
-our gas prices here in Nova Scotia are regulated and the price only changes on Thursday night at midnight. Well this weekend they took the liberties to jack the price way up in response to rising prices across the country due to Hurricane Ike. It’s now at 1.44. Now that the rest of the country’s gas prices are falling back down, of course we’ll be ripped off for the rest of the week at 1.44
-speaking of being ripped off – Nova Scotia Power is hiking our power rates 9.4% this year. Living here in Nova Scotia is so much more expensive than Ontario.

I’ve got tons of photos to get up here still – they are currently being restored from my hard drive backup so soon I can get back to photo blogging!

SNOW! GAS! OUCH!

It snowed over night! Not so much here in town though – I was the only car in the parking lot covered in white slush.

Gas went up 7 cents over night – to $134.8 1!! 88|

Ever bruised the top of your ear? No? Well it’s not has hard as you think. You just have to wear some audio headphones – the ones that go around the back of your neck (thanks Julie), and then put your glasses on. Shuffle them each a bit while you’re working. Then try to take off the headset.

I did this a couple days ago and got the top of my ear horribly pinched between the glasses or the headset. If I tried to take one off, it only squeezed and pinched my ear worse. I couldn’t get off my glasses, the headphones were stuck and my ear was pinched tight between them all! I almost had to go for help. I’m too proud for that though. I was leaning towards sacrificing my ear and just pulling them all until something let go. Which is what I did.

Two days later the top of my ear still hurts – even when the water hits in it the shower.

I bet you didn’t know of this danger lurking in your workplace.

Perhaps I should go back to contact lenses.

Tuesday’s Plans

We didn’t hear anything yet (but didn’t expect to).
Once we negotiate and get the final price, the deal is dependent on financing, house inspection, house appraisal, and a water test. We’re asking them to pump out the septic tank and provide their heating costs and land survey.

Lawyers closing fees are WAY more out here. Yuck.

Hey did I mention they regulate their gas prices out here to so every single gas station is 116.9 for Regular.

Soon we’re going down for the buffet breakfast special in the hotel. It is in the Antigonish Highland Games this week and coming weekend so there are some special events. Today we’re hopefully going to catch the RCMP Musical Ride! That’ll be awesome!

Happy Birthday Brian!

Happy Birthday to Brian, where ever he may be today! Las Vegas I hear, or maybe L.A. On vacation. Is that guy ever not on vacation? Once again he’s grabbed the number I left behind, so Happy 29th bro.

I trust everyone had a Happy Valentine’s day with their loved one, friends, family, or pet? Monty and I had a good snuggle for Valentine’s Day as we watched Gilmore Girls in bed. Yesterday was his 4 month birthday! That was the first time that he stayed in one spot long enough (yes I bribed him with his lion, rawhide, and nylabone, but he still stayed beside me on the bed for almost a full hour!).

The gas station man gave me a free Canadian Olympic flag this morning for my truck window. So Go Canada Go! 6-2 at the end of the 2nd period. I have always made fun of the fools with flags clamped to their windows, but I guess since it was free, and it’s Flag Day, and the Olympics are fun, I’ll join your silly clan for a day or so.

Boxing Day 2005

The Verkley Christmas was a smashing success. I have mucho photos and videos of the occasion. Mom and Grandma babysat (pupsat?) Monty. I had my cellphone on the whole day so they could call me in an emergency. I called a couple times and they were just laughing and laughing at Monty. They had a lot of fun, only I found out later that he peed FIVE TIMES in the house!! He’s never done that with me! I guess they just didn’t know his “I really have to pee” signals.

Before we headed out, I had to boost my battery. I had turned on the interior light to find something on Christmas Eve and I knew when I turned it on I was going to forget to turn it off because it’s so dim, and of course I did. And then… AHH! my booster cables aren’t in my truck! I must have taken them out when I was rearranging the back of my truck. Good thing Brian and Julie both had cables and good thing Brian was more familiar with where to hook them because I always just watch and I’ve never been in charge of the boosting operation.

I got further truck stupid when I waited to fill up until night time. I assumed Elginfield’s Petro Canada would be open still. I went by at 9:30pm. Nope! My gut said Mitchell would be open so I decided not to detour to London and continued on. Of course Mitchell wasn’t open. I went in to the Becker’s to ask if they knew of anywhere open and a customer was helping me but where he suggested was closed too. I only had an eighth of a tank. I just had my gas tank replaced. On my old tank I would have been stranded an eighth before that. The customer said for sure I could get to Listowel on an eighth. HA. So Julie and I pressed on. I knew Brian was about an hour or more behind us so if worse came to worse he could pass us, go on to Listowel, and fill a jerry can (gerry can?), and come back to rescue us. Or should I just park at our relatives in Monkton? Well I just kept speeding on. I decided I was going to speed through all the small towns so I could get caught by the cops and I think those OPP highway patrol men carry gas for stranded idiots like me. I decided speeding through towns would be a last case scenario. So long story short we made it to the Becker’s in Listowel where I was able to get $20 in gas. I can’t believe we made it!! AHHHH what a stressful stupid drive.

So today we’re expecting company shortly, then off to Dad’s. Monty is sleeping in his crate. He gets really bitey and defiant when he’s sleepy so he might as well have a nap before the company comes. I need to go pooper scoop too.

Still not sure if I’m headed home tomorrow or the next day. I’m worried about Zeus and my house and things. I live SOO far away.. Can’t believe I used to live another 8 hours farther and I’d take 2 whole days to get home for Christmas. That was nuts.

Tuesday – Back at Work

I was feeling better today and went back to work. Dad left this morning. Dad is amazing. He worked sooo hard for me! What an amazing dad! I’m sure he’ll be in shape for Kilimanjaro, he’s a work horse!
I went to Walmart after work to spend yet more money. I got a fabric shower curtain I cut down in length for a curtain for the bathroom window. It looks great! I just need to hem the bottom now.
Then I tackled the big pile in the driveway – all the garbage from the weekend. I shovelled it all into contractor strength garbage bags because our dump isn’t set up so we can easily dump out. I could only fill some bags 1/4 full because ceramic tile pieces are heavy!!
Then I enjoyed my new shower again.
I got gas tonight – 120.5 – I didn’t fill up. I wanted to cross to Michigan to get cheaper gas, but the back of my truck is loaded with the first load of dump junk, so I got $35 of gas here. My truck feels like a low rider with all the weight in the back!
I somehow got Herc’s wireless connection working over at his house today too, so he can surf wirelessly from his living room on his new laptop. He’s happy.
Now I’ll try to get some pictures up, but it’s late and I gotta sleep, so we’ll see.

Okay photos up.
Here is the final product after my shower this evening! It really doesn’t do it justice, it’s soo nice!

Now to finish off the walls with the tongue and groove pine! I have to pull off the rest of the old ceramic tiles first. I can’t wait until it’s done!

Brief Update

Gas has dropped all the way to 136.1. Big whoopy. It’s only 2.99 across the river. I just may go across the bridge when I need gas next time, we’ll see.

Winger’s back legs have gone out a couple more times. Almost seems neurological, they are stiff. Today they went straight back. A second later he’s fine.

We watched the movie “Sahara” tonight. I really liked it! Lots of action! Totally not realistic, but the characters were fun! All except Penelope Cruz, what a bad actress. But Matthew McConaughey was good, Steve Zahn was even better. Herc didn’t enjoy it – because he’s read the book – I guess he thinks the book was better.

Okay, that’s it for my brief update, over and out…
