Did a little shopping for Julie today

My sister Julie’s birthday is coming up so I thought I’d do a little birthday shopping for her today.

First, we got our fishing licenses for 2013 with the hopes our lake is going to eventually thaw.

We got some worms too. Notice that they aren’t for human consumption. Good to know.

Then I went in search for the perfect present. Here are a couple things I spotted:

Nothing really jumped out at me though. Maybe I’m shopping in the wrong stores.

Then we drove the back roads for a few hours. Most of the lakes are still frozen.

This was neat. It was in the middle of nowhere off a back road. The water was going in the hatch and coming out the culvert below.April 6, 2013

We found a pond that was open and I think all the mallard ducks found it too! April 6, 2013

Lots of robins around today!

Amazing long 2-4, except for one dead power supply

Epic 2-4 long weekend!

We’ve had GORGEOUS weather.

Here are our accomplishments:

  • I was a judge at the Lion’s club multi-district Speakout event.
  • We went out in the boat and caught 4 fish.  3 were baby perch, the size of large lures.  We tossed them back.  Then Jeff had a bigger pull on his line and it was a sucker! He tossed it back too. That was the first sucker fish I saw here. Or actually anywhere. Except for in the magazine I was just reading about them.
  • I gained freckles and the very faint start of my 2012 tan.
  • We had a fire and watched the stars and drank cold beer.
  • I fed most of the blackflies with my blood.
  • Jeff is smoking ribs today in his smoker. Probably enough ribs for most of the neighbourhood, but we’re not sharing :-) It smells AMAZINGGGGGG!
  • We got 3 sides of the shed painted with a nice cedar shade stain, but surprisingly ran out of stain.  Who knew it would take 2 full cans and we wouldn’t even finish the first coat?
  • Jeff braved the hungry black flies and cut the grass.  We’ve been discussing buying a ride-on mower, but the price may be a little prohibitive.  That and we don’t have a massive lawn.  Jeff can do it in an hour, but it takes me probably 90 minutes.  We may go for a self-propelled instead so we don’t have to bend over and push this old one so hard.
  • I tried the new Coors Light Iced T – at first I loved it. It tastes like light beer with a strong ice tea after taste. Then I thought I’d rather just have the beer without the iced tea taste.  I bet it’s refreshing on a hot summer day. I’d drink it again.

Alright, here are some photos. If you want to hear about my power supply woes, stay tuned after the photos.

The Power Supply Situation

Unfortunately computer problems will always plague me, especially on long weekends and holidays. My big new desktop computer powerhouse was on when we went fishing yesterday, but it was off when we got home. Uh-oh. I think the power supply is shot because I can’t get a single LED on it, or inside it, to fire up. I changed the cords and tried a different wall outlet, but it is dead. So I was up late last night researching power supplies and ordered a new one. This one was a Seasonic and only had a year warranty, which is up in January. The new one I ordered is a Corsair and has a SEVEN year warranty. That is impressive!

So I’ve rigged up my little 13″ laptop to one of my big 24″ monitors. It is working, but the resolution is so big I feel like I should sit across the room. It’ll allow me to do basic things for a few days, but I’m going to be dying for it to be shipped, and delivered! Then I’ll have to rewire everything with the new power cords I guess. I’ve never had to replace a power supply before.

But I suspect I know why it died.

My UPS died a few weeks ago. That is UPS for uninterruptible power supply. It’s a box you plug of your most important electronics into and it keeps the power clean and steady to your electronics, and allows them to power down gently when the power goes out, rather than a hard off.

As I read more about UPS’s, I discovered that the one I used was okay, but not for high quality power supplies (of the active PFC (power factor correction) variety) like I have in my big desktop computer. I was supposed to be using a more expensive UPS that outputs a pure sine wave of power and the one I had was outputting a simulated sine wave.

So power supply will be replaced first.  The UPS I require is pricey.  APC does have a buy back program and they’ll take my old one and recycle it with a discount for the new one, so I might go that route.

So, bottom line, the webcam showing the view from my window will be offline until my computer is fixed later this week.

(and if a new power supply doesn’t fix the problem, then I’ll be kinda miserable.)

First time out in the boat for 2011

We hit the lake with the boat WAY later this spring than last year. This year the ice lingered into April and it is has been cold and windy and miserable. Jeff has been busy building his new shed, and I’ve been busy with a course I’m taking online.

Yesterday morning the sun was up, the winds were calm, and we were off!

Many of the cottages around the lake are quiet and dark all year, but this week our seasonal neighbours have been filtering back. We were the only boat on the water for awhile. But we could hear all the busy cottagers hammering, sawing, and one really obnoxious cottager was blasting loud country music across the lake.

Jeff dropped anchor at one of our favourite fishing spots and we got our lines wet for the first of the year!

Unfortunately it quickly clouded over and the wind picked up. You wouldn’t believe how many fish we caught!

OK so we didn’t catch any fish. Not even a nibble.

But I did bring up some lovely leaves from the bottom of the lake!

The score is 4-1, in Jeff’s favour, but mine is bigger!

Jeff had the day off today, but he still waited until I got home from work so we could go fishing!!

Jeff is up in our fish tally, 4-1, but I think mine was the biggest! Jeff had to take one of his home to the freezer because it swallowed the hook and despite all heroic attempts, its hook ingestion injury was just too severe.

Jeff caught a white perch too. I didn’t get a photo of it, but it was cute.

Jeff caught a fish on his birthday!

Yesterday we went out on the boat in the late afternoon hours. It was Jeff’s birthday and the weather was unbelievable!

Here are some photos:

Here you go Brian, here is our house from the lake:

Here is the first fish of the season! We both got little nibbles on our line at the same time, but only Jeff was the successful fisherman!!

Here is a neat old log cabin cottage on the only island in the lake.

We might need a dock soon. We put the boat in the lake about 3 kms down the road, and the good fishing spot is a km or so in the other direction of our house. The little 8hp motor we have means we have some travel time, but that is okay :D

The is our wireless internet tower just around the curve from our house.

Awwww life is good.

And I’m recovering from an ear infection so I put on a head set while we screamed travelled down the lake to keep the wind out of my ears.

Test Drive – It floats!

Day off work, and Jeff was up at 5 o’clock eager to fish.

I delayed him until closer to 9 and we went for a ride! It was cold and foggy but we set out on the lake for the first time. Here are some photos:

Thanks to Brian and Leanne for the waterproof bag they got us for Christmas! We put the camera, binoculars, and fishing licenses in it.

Jeff set up his fish finder. The lake is all about 150 feet deep with a few fish at the very bottom.

We’re planning to go back out this afternoon when the sun comes out!

Three Blue Fin Tuna

We took a trip to Canso today to watch the fisherman bring their blue fin tuna catches in to the wharf. We were lucky enough to see THREE of them! Here are some photos. I’ll warp out the fisherman and the dock worker’s faces since I don’t have their permission to make them famous here on my blog.

I really wish there was a way for me to capture the smell of Canso today. It smelled like someone had dumped 50 tanker trucks of rotten fish oil in the sun. I think I could get used to it. Jeff on the other hand…. he didn’t care for it so much.

Tuna #1 – 306 lbs (weight after gutted, and fin, tail, and head are chopped off)

The seagulls really loved the tuna scraps. Seagulls out here are GIGANTIC compared to their Ontario cousins.

I like this one – he looks like he’s dancing in delight:

Tuna #2 – 466 lbs

Tuna #2 came in by pick up truck from further down the shore. I imagine they had to bring it here to be processed. They have a warehouse with ice packing facilities in Canso. Often these tuna are auctioned off to the Japanese.

The heads and tails and guts are taken back out to the ocean to be dumped.

The price of blue fin tuna was $16/pound last week. That makes this last tuna worth $8160. Not bad for a day out fishing!

Saturday Morning – Jeff’s out in the boat!

Jeff is out on the lake this morning with 2 of his co-workers. They volunteer themselves and their work boats once a year to a Big Brothers & Sisters fishing derby. Yesterday the lake was stocked with lots of fish for the children to try to catch (if they weren’t all caught over night by anyone who knows the lake was stocked!)

I’m cool and cloudy but it’s supposed to turn into a nice day. I’m going to work on sites for my clients for a few hours, and then I’ll cut the grass and tackle some more of the gardens.

There are still leaves coming out on some of the trees. We’re way behind Ontario. We have old crab apple trees along the driveway going down the hill. They have been in flower all week.

There are lupins growing all around our driveway up by our house and they are just starting to show colour. Not sure if they’ll still be around for our July house guests!

FREEDOM!!!!

WOOOOOOOOOO WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE FREEDOM! That Jeff guy who is always hanging around just left on a fishing trip with his brother up in Julie’s old neighbourhood of Northwestern Quebec and he won’t be back for EIGHT days and he has no cell service or way of contacting me when he’s there! Not even email!:>>

Oh crap, you saw right through my fake joy didn’t you. I’ll miss him. :’( Hopefully I’ll take advantage of all the free time and get some real work done and make a wad of extra cash before he comes back. Even better would be if I sold my house before he gets back!

May Long Weekend

What a glorious long weekend.

Canoe

I was out in the north country today, the peaceful back roads of northern Ontario. Good long drive, canoe, fishing, campfire lunch, sunburn, and blackflies. Ahhhhhh.

Campfire Lunch

Saw a deer, two moose, groundhog, many squirrels, chipmunks, a couple herons, and no, didn’t catch any fish.

Tree

Gotta nap now. More photos later….
