Mom & Grandma’s Visit

I’m seriously behind in my photo blogging!

Mom and Grandma Stock visited over a week ago. Jeff and I picked them up in Pictou from the ferry on Friday (after their visit with Joe and Patricia) and took them to the Halifax airport on Monday so they could fly home.

Here are some photos I took while we were waiting for their ferry to arrive:

I told you early about our rummy card playing. And I told you about the whales and seals we saw. But that wasn’t enough for Mom. She demanded that she been shown an east coast deer. So we did one better. We were on a gravel road out near Wine Harbour and there was a doe and TWO fawns on the road in front of us! Take that! :D

On Monday we got early so we could drive to Halifax, and then go a wee bit past Halifax to Peggy’s Cove. Mom and I hadn’t been there since our family vacation in 1990. Grandma Stock was there in the 90′s with her brother and sister-in-law. Jeff was there in 2001. It was a dark rainy day, but the rocks weren’t too wet and just a little bit slippery so we still walked on them to get some photos. What a crazy tourist attraction. I guess a rocky shoreline with a lighthouse is some fascinating thing if you aren’t used to it – but it isn’t much different from the shoreline in many places in Ontario – Killbear Provincial Park north of Parry Sound for example, minus the trees. I like the old fishing buildings in Peggy’s Cove more than the shoreline. Here are some photos:

Plooop… Gurggle…. Gurggle….

I was running around this morning at work getting material ready for a presentation I was making to the Librarians.

The phone rang and it was the passport office calling. They were so casual but I immediately thought, uh-oh, what did I do wrong!?! They were just looking for an alternative number for my guarantor who was on vacation and not answering the telephone. They needed to touch base with her hopefully today so I dashed out to my car to get her number.

What a hot and humid day. My clothes were immediately stuck to me. I briskly walk by the workers who are sandblasting the exterior wall of the library on my way to and from the parking lot. I was initially going to call Patricia from my car on my cell, but sandblasting is SO LOUD!

After I fetched the number from my car dashed back inside (with my hands over my ears). That is one of THE loudest sounds on the ear drums!

On my way back to my office and stopped quick to pee. Mission accomplished. I stood up and pulled on my shorts. My skin was all sticky from dashing about outside so I had to give them a good tug.

Plooooop… gurggle… gurggle..

NO!!!! I did NOT want to turn around. I just knew it.

Sure enough.. my cell phone flew out of my shorts pocket and hit the bullseye. As it sank in the toilet bowl it released big air bubbles.

I immediately pulled up my sleeve and dove down….

And pulled out my wet cell phone, dripping with toilet water (and likely pee).

I tried as fast as I could to get the battery out but I wasted precious time trying to turn it off first. I don’t know why. I guess one doesn’t think straight when they’ve just plunged their arm, elbow deep into the toilet bowl.

I quietly went back to my desk, layed out some kleenex, and pulled it all apart to dry. I was trying to hide behind my monitor – I really didn’t feel like sharing my misfortune right away.

I really do think the cell is toast. I cheated once later today and re-assembled it to see if it would turn on. Nadda.

I eventually confessed to a coworker and he told me about an indicator that is located inside the cell phone that shows if it has ever gotten wet. I went and checked – and there is a big red fuzzy circle that wasn’t there before it was wet. I guess this stops cell phone store clerks from troubleshooting other toilet bowl water soaked cell phones

On the bright, drier side, I checked online on Virgin Mobile’s website. Since my cell is a basic, pay as you go cell, I can replace it for only $39.

I googled this afternoon to find out what you are supposed to do when you drop your phone in the water. Pulling out the battery immediately is key. Another one of the common suggestions is to put it in a bowl of dried rice, so that will soak up the water.

Let this be a lesson to you all. Keep a bowl of dried rice handy at work!

Quick Update while Mom & Grandma are reading

Mom and Grandma are visiting us this weekend. They just went up to get ready for bed and to read their books, so I have a moment to check my email and blog a bit.

We saw WHALES today! My first whales ever. AND SEALS!! We went up to Cape George in the misty morning weather. The mist stopped when we got up there. From up high where the light house is we could see WHALES! Luckily we had our incredible new binoculars with us so we could zoom in for a better look. There were lots of them! We could see their backs arch as they broke through the surface of the water, then their top fin would stick up, and then they’d elegantly glide back under the surface.

Julie you must be so jealous right now! Poor Julie was here visiting in April and stood on a cold wet wharf in the rain trying to spot a whale.

The seals were hard to spot from up there on the cape without the binoculars. Their heads would pop up and sometimes you could see them look around and then dive back down.

SO COOL!

We were up until the wee hours playing cards last night until Grandma won the game. We played again this afternoon and Mom won. Jeff said we have to keep playing until he wins. I don’t know what the name of the game is, but you play round after round working your way through the sequences of cards you have to get. You start with 2 sets of 3, and then you work your way through straights and set combos until you finish at the grand finale level of a straight of 8 out of your 11 cards in your hand. We had planned to get up early to head to the Farmer’s Market and then to the Highland Games parade, but everyone was sleepy. I sacrificed my sleep and woke up at 6am to keep the pets all calm and quiet and down here on the main floor while everyone slept.

We did take a drive by the Highland Games and saw many men and a few women in their kilts and tartans. It was raining so we didn’t pay the entrance fee to spectate on the activities.

Did you hear who is stopping by Nova Scotia on Tuesday? Tropical Storm Cristobal! The latest advisory has gusty winds and rains hitting north eastern Nova Scotia on Tuesday. We really need rain so I’m game. Plus we have that stockpile of canned food in the basement from Costco in case it speeds up into a bigger storm :D

Our Halifax Vacation

Yesterday we headed out early to Halifax to be tourists for the day!

We first went to the Passport Office and I passed in my passport application. I’ve never had a passport but soon we’ll all need one even to get into the U.S. by land so it was time to get ‘er done!

After that we went to the Alexander Keith’s Brewery! Jeff and I both love Keith’s beer and we were hoping they would have a gift shop where we could pick up some nice beer glasses. We were in luck!

We took a tour of the brewery. It turns out it isn’t so much of the brewery anymore. It is a historical building and Alexander Keith brewed beer there since 1820! The tour was great, and put on by 4 really good actors. Throughout the tour they pretend it’s the 1800′s and they took us through a restored set of rooms. It is the oldest brewery in North America that is still brewing beer. But they are only brewing a bit of speciality beer there. All the rest of the beer is made somewhere else in the city. In a room that was mocked up like the dining room of the Keith’s house, we watched a video about the history of Alexander Keith and the brewery. It was really interesting.

Of course the best part of the tour was the free sampling! At the end of the tour we ended up in Monk’s Head Pub, an old looking pub right out of the history books. They had their traditional pale ale, their red beer, and their brand new lager to taste. I had a glass of their red. It was really good! Then they called for last call and said we could all have seconds. I downed the first and saddled up to the bar for a pale ale.

I know I had my moments in University, but I don’t think I’ve EVER downed two beers as fast as that in my life. Jeff thinks it might have been 15 minutes. I think it felt more like 5-6.

After we stumbled out of the Stag’s Head we hit the City Deli for some lunch to sober up! :p

Then we headed up to the Citadel! I can’t remember if we hit the Citadel when I was in Halifax for vacation when I was 15. We got a walking tour there from a great tour guide. The Citadel is on a big hill in Halifax. It is the 3rd fort on the hill. This one was built by the British around 1850 and was in place to guard against landward attacks, primarily from Americans. It was built with such intimidating design, that it was never attacked.

Here are some photos from the Citadel:

After the Citadel we headed to Costco for food. You’d think a household of two wouldn’t need such bulk items, but I married a carnivore. Jeff NEEDS his meat. And the grocery stores in Antigonish do not sell good cuts of meat, and the meat they do sell is overpriced by about 200%. We’ve thought about becoming Costco members and yesterday we bit the bullet and signed up.

We even brought a cooler to bring the meat home. A lot of the stuff at Costco doesn’t seem to be any cheaper than a regular grocery store, but there were a few deals (other than the meat). We got enough papertowels and kleenex for a year at bargain prices. And they sell rawhides for the dogs that are so cheap so we got a huge bag of those. We bought a few flats of canned vegetables and tomato sauce to stock up the basement with our emergency rations. Just in case another hurricane comes to visit or some other unforeseen event.

Not sure what today has in store. These days off are flying by! We didn’t get out of bed until 10. LOVE IT!

Weekend in PEI

Great weekend in PEI.

Monty got 3 more points so he is up to 8 now. Two more to go!

We visited Uncle Joe and Patricia’s cottage. Really nice place! Mom and Grandma were visiting there. We got a personal tour of the area, had a delicious cheeseburger and fries at a nearby chip stand, had a Keith’s (beer) at the golf course that Uncle Joe works at, and finished the visit off with a round of scallops, bbq’d salmon, and shrimp. Delicious!

After our visit we headed on to Summerside to our motel. This time we had a reservation at the Green Acres motel in Summerside. What a wonderful experience! After staying at that hell hole three weeks ago, this was paradise! We had a end room. It was old, but clean, and air conditioned! We had a kitchenette with a table and chairs. There was a tree and a lawn right outside our door and on the other side of the motel there was a huge open grass covered lot. All for just $69/night. The manager was a very nice lady.

We took the ferry from Pictou, Nova Scotia over to Prince Edward Island. The ferry is only a little over an hour from here. The ferry ride is 75 minutes across the Northumerland Strait. It is just 22 km over the water so you can actually see Prince Edward Island from Pictou, Nova Scotia. The ferry service is great. We were there early because I was panicked over bad memories of being late for the Chichimaun ferry in Ontario, and waiting for hours and hours and hours. We were there early, but there was a really nice couple from Oakville parked behind us in the ferry line and we chatted to them. They were looking for property in Cape Breton for a summer place and we were sharing our Ontario and Nova Scotia stories and the experiences we had moving out here.

On the way back, we had a reservation for the 6pm ferry. We headed right to the ferry after Monty’s last show and got there at 4:27pm. They actually let us on the 4:30 ferry! We didn’t have to wait at all!

Jeff and I are both on holidays all week and loving every second of it! Today we did some errands in town and placed our order for our new wood stove. It is on sale this week, and they are tossing in a free blower kit and a 1/2 cord of wood! Sold!

Tomorrow we are heading to Halifax to do some shopping and sightseeing. Not 100% sure what we’ll get up to, but we’re planning on Costco, maybe the Citadel, definitely a tour of the Alexander Keith’s brewery (my brother Brian and his wife Leanne gave me the admission fee for my birthday present in December!).

As for the rest of the week, I’m sure it’ll fly by! Mom and Grandma will be arriving on Friday. That means house cleaning on Thursday!

Doggie Pedicure

Monty is in another dog show this weekend in PEI. So it’s bathing, grooming, and styling week! Well not so much on the styling because the goal is to have his coat look thick and beautiful, but to be relatively straight!

Cutting Monty’s nails is the most unbearable part. He hates it. We battle. Last year we bought a Dremel multi-tool so now I grind his nails down. He bears it a little more but it can take 4 days for me to get every nail short enough, and by then he’s got his ears tucked back and he runs and hides at the very sight of me. We used to try to pin him on the bed, but he won that battle by peeing on our duvet.

Today he has a vet visit – just an annual visit that is several months over due. He’ll probably have to get some vaccines. I’m so willing for them to sedate him and cut his nails super short, but then I’d have to go there all the time for them to do it and that would mean me admitting failure.

My last Golden Retrievers, Winger and Surf, were so good at pedicure time. They’d lie on their backs and snooze while I snip snip snipped their nails off. Monty fights every bit of it. Could he have super sensitive nerves in his nails? Or does he just like the battle?

Fresh Strawberries

We live right down the road from two strawberry growers. I gotta tell ya, these are NOTHING like the strawberries you buy in the grocery store. These are full of colour and taste. My fingers are actually red already from them!

SWARM!

We got the herd of ants under control last night. Today I’m going to pick up a couple of those ant trap poison baits that I can hide somewhere away from the canines and the feline.

But you know the excitement couldn’t be over.

This morning Jeff got vicious stung by a wasp just going out to his truck! My Golden Retriever Monty got attacked by a couple of wasps in the same area on Tuesday. Why are the wasps becoming so protective of our deck?

Well now we know. Jeff said he found a wasp nest under our top step going on to the desk! He soaked it with wasp spray.

I’m becoming a fan of pesticides ;-)

Do they make snake-icides too?
