My Thoughts of the Day

We’re waiting for the chimney/woodstove guy to show up to assess our house/chimney/wood burning needs. I think he’s a couple of hours late now, although he didn’t give a specific time, so at 8pm we gave in and ate, and he still didn’t show. Who knows – we’re rural now – he’ll show when he wants. The wood stove he recommends: Napoleon 1900 Our plan is to get a wood stove in now, and to get the wood so we’ll have it stacked and drying for the fall.

I read today that Terry Fox’s restored Tour of Hope van is stopping here on Tuesday on it’s trip across the country. It was in 1980 when Terry Fox headed out on his Marathon of Hope. I started kindergarten just as Terry had to stop his run. I remember my kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Collinson, telling us about Terry and showing us his mission on the map on the wall. Through my entire life, growing up as a Canadian, I was always aware of Terry Fox, the Terry Fox runs, and the story of this young man who boldly faced his cancer and ran across half the country with his prosthetic leg. But in the last few years I’m somehow begun to appreciate his mission even more. I remember being at the Terry Fox statue/memorial out of Thunder Bay a few years back, a place I often stopped, but this time a man was playing “Amazing Grace” on his bagpipes there and I brought me to tears. Then I happened to catch the documentary of his life and his run on TV late one night. I cried my eyes out. If you ever get a chance to watch any of that old footage, take it. If more people in our society had a quarter of the hope and determination of that young man our world would be a different place. Cancer took him when he was only 22. Take a look and see if the van is passing through your town – http://tourofhope.ca/toh/

Thanks so much to my Mom and my brother for sponsoring Monty & I in the Purina Walk for Dog Guides on Sunday! Did you know that the Lions Foundation of Canada charges NOTHING to the person who receives a guide dog? And 100% of your donation goes to raising and training the dogs. They use corporate sponsorships for all their administrative costs. They have 3 types of dog guides. There are Canine Vision Dog Guides for people with vision impairments. There are Hearing Ear Dog Guides for people with hearing impairments. They also have a Special Skills Dog Guides program for other medical and physical assistance, like to assist people with muscular dystrophy or cerebral palsy, as well as dogs that are specially trained to sense seizures. http://www.purinawalkfordogguides.com/personalPage.cfm?ID=3025

Still no wood stove guy. I guess he got tied up at his last job.

ooooo we’re so stuffed

Jeff and I had a great morning outside doing yard work. I cut the grass while Jeff cleaned out the shed and burned stuff.

Jeff's big fire

The Evening Grosbeak came back, and he brought 2 of his girlfriends! All 3 of them sat in the tree for quite some time before they went to the birdfeeder. Then all 3 sat on the sunflower seed feeder and snacked for a bit.

This afternoon we went to the spring casserole dinner for our community development association. We had a late lunch, and we not at all hungry, but we wanted to support the community, and I was hoping we’d meet more people.

We went, ate, and left, without talking to anyone :-( No one even asked us to enter the 50-50 draw, but since we walked away the big winners at the fall casserole supper, we felt fine not gambling on this draw too. Don’t go to a casserole dinner if you aren’t hungry. It hurts a little.

After the dinner we took the dogs to the lake down from us. It’s less populated and there is a picnic rest area there. No one was there so we took the boys down to the water to swim. Trooper didn’t want to swim today. I imagine his old joints weren’t keen on the cold water. Monty was a keener thought and could have retrieved those bumpers for another hour, but other people showed up, and brought the black flies, so we backed in it and headed for home.

I don’t think I’ve ever tired Monty out once. He swam out for probably 25 retrieves and he hasn’t napped yet.

We were just watching TV and I saw a hummingbird zip by the window. Jeff ran to the kitchen to prepare the hummingbird food to put in the feeder. We didn’t even have it out yet. 5 minutes later the ruby-throated hummingbird was back! He sat on a branch sticking out of the pile of cut alders. He sat so still – if you didn’t see where he landed, you would have thought he was a leaf. Then he started coming to the feeder! We took 33 photos, but he’s a tricky bugger to focus on. Luckily he sat to feed so here are the best shots (some with the flash, some without – it’s dusk – even trickier!):

Today’s Adventure – Backroads and a Waterfall!

It’s a cold dark misty day today. We were up early to go to the season’s opening farmers market in town. We bought some fiddleheads to try to see if we can figure out all the fuss for these things.

We signed a petition while we were there. Our county is planning to expropriate 80 acres of an active, productive, commercial sugar maple forest to turn into this ridiculous recreational centre they are planning. It will include a defunct ski hill that is all run down. I have no idea how they are going to spend millions on building this recreational area, based on a ski hill – it doesn’t snow enough here to shovel it, let alone ski on it.

Anyway… we took a bunch of back roads today – got the blue beauty really good and dirty. It went through a lot of pot holes and some mini wash outs. It did well and saved us the gas of cruising around in the truck.

We went to find a trail Jeff heard of from one of his officers. It was supposed to be a trail down to a waterfall. I wasn’t expected a water fall like the one we found!! We hiked a very short trail along the cliff side. Jeff took the sketchy looking trail straight down to the water to get the photos down below. I stayed up top and studied all the fascinating moss and lichens that grow in the forests here. The spruce forests here are so damp looking – with green stuff hanging off the bark, and the forest floor is a thick bed of moss.

Here are some photos:

This was Jeff from earlier in the week. He had an unfortunate incident while he was practising his archery.

Purina Walk for Guide Dogs

Monty and I have registered to walk in the Antigonish Lions Foundation of Canada Purina Walk for Dog Guides next weekend – Sunday June 1st.

The goal of the walk is to help raise funds for the training and placement of Dog Guides for Canadians with visual, hearing and medical or physical disabilities. All Dog Guides are provided to eligible candidates at no cost. Funding for Dog Guide training is 100 per cent obtained from donations and no government funding is received. Dog Guides Canada has already provided their specially trained Dog Guides to more than 1200 men, women and children from ages eight to 88. With your help more people experience the mobility, safety and independence a devoted Dog Guide partner brings.

If you wish to sponsor us with a donation to the Purina Walk for Dog Guides, you can visit my personalized site: http://www.purinawalkfordogguides.com/personalPage.cfm?ID=3025

Thank-you!

New Bird! Evening Grosbeak?

There is a new bird outside RIGHT now! He’s way bigger than the finches, he’s yellow white and black, and has a huge thick beak. He’s eating sunflower seeds.

Here are a couple pictures Jeff just got of him. The closest pictures in the bird book is an Evening Grosbeak:

Can you see all the yellow finches in the tree? I guess they are actually called goldfinches. We sometimes have 20+ of them here all at once. They sing really pretty too.

The sun actually came out!

It’s been dark and rainy for days.. weeks? And today seemed no different, but around 10:30am the sun started poking through the clouds!

We took out the solar lights Mom got us last summer, and the welcome sign she brought out for Jeff’s birthday, and the Golden Retriever sign the breeders sent us at Christmas, and a few other seasonal decorations.

The sun stayed out so we e headed into town and bought some plants for the hanging planters on the porch. The rest of the gardens around here seem to be stocked full of perennials so we’ll see how they progress this summer (our first summer here).

We came back and started planting the containers. Jeff put together this water hose caddy we found at Canadian Tire. And then it happened…. 213409820934820398423 black flies came out to play. I was trying to plant the plants – and my arms were bleeding, the top of my ear was going numb from the bites and they were sitting on my glasses. It became a race for survival!

This porcupine was wandering on someone’s front lawn.

Porcupines sure have a real waddle to them as they slowly meander away! I should have taken a video.

This was a pretty little lake between our house and the ocean. We were just exploring back roads.

MAY 11th SNOWSTORM

It is snowing outside – A LOT!

It isn’t staying on the ground, but it is building up a layer of slush on the porch and garbage cans we have on the porch.

Snow in MAY!

It is really windy and the 4th garbage can blew over. (No we don’t make enough garbage for 4 cans, but we have to have 1 can for paper to recycle (or just burn), one for recyclables, one for the bottles & cans that have a deposit on them, and one for actual garbage. The organics can is around the corner).

Snow in MAY!

Update! 11:30am
Now it is starting to stick to the ground! I can see it on the hill side across the lake!
