Noel Movie

Here is a movie that I took after the sun came up on Sunday morning. The worst of the storm was over, but the winds were still strong! I was standing on the front porch with my back and all my weight pressing against the metal door, yet the wind was still blowing me around.

You should be able to view this movie in Quicktime. I’ll put it on YouTube later (I really need to get off this incredibly sore tail bone)

Power is back on!

Our power was restored this afternoon!

Jeff had to toss out everything in the freezer, and most of the stuff in the fridge. It was thawed and some was stinky. Oh well. Glad we didn’t have anything in the big freezer yet. Jeff is ready to price generators for the next big storm though!

There is still no power across the lake. I feel so guilty – like I want to keep our lights off so they don’t hate us and our good electricity fortune. However we have a big yard light that is rather difficult to hide!

It took me hours to get our internet working again. It seems the router isn’t working. We had a newer one we had never used so I now have it hooked up instead. I don’t know if it somehow got a power surge or what – it appears to work perfectly – with all the right lights and settings, but it won’t transfer any data from the modem to our computers.

Noel

We survived.

I am at work. Luckily there is a shower here so I could get cleaned up. There is no power still at our house and might not be until tomorrow night. Jeff was supposed to go away this week but there is no power at his office so he needs to stay here.

That storm was nothing like I’ve ever experienced! Have you ever had to wait in the dark for sunrise? I started counting at 6 hours until sunrise. It was a long night! My fault though – I purposely slept in my clothes so I would have a lousy sleep so I could wake up and catch some of the storm. I woke up at 2:20am. The power was already off. I was awake in bed most of the night wishing I was sleeping through it. The whole house was shaking – including the bed and night stand beside my head. There were gusts that sounded like the roof was one nail away from going.

Around 4am I went downstairs and was shining the flashlight out the doors to see if we still had our deck and trees and vehicles. I grabbed the battery radio and took it upstairs. Our local radio station here is an absolute piece of garbage. Even today, they were still not saying where there was power, where there wasn’t. They didn’t have any updates of any kind. Their lead news story yesterday evening at 5pm was about Pakistan. And it was a local guy sitting here in town reading it.

CBC out of Halifax was the most amazing source. They had reporters out all over the Maritimes all weekend. Until noon on Sunday they just let people call in from where ever and report what they were experiencing.

I sat perched at our bedroom window for the next couple of hours. Once it got a bit lighter outside, but still long before sun up, I could start to make out the enormous whitecaps on our inland lake across the road.

After sun up I took the dogs out. It was mild out – about 14 – because the air was tropical coming up from the south. I took some photos and videos I’ll put up when we get power back at home.

We drove around yesterday and there are trees down EVERYWHERE. Some are ripped right out of the ground, and others are snapped right in half. I saw houses and sheds missing big patches of shingles. There is a cottage across the lake with TWO large trees on it. Lots of garbage boxes at the ends of people’s laneways had their wooden lids ripped right off the hinges. Some driveways were washed out again.

We thought we were ready, but by last night when we were sitting there in the dark thinking about it, it would have been nice to have some battery lights or lanterns. We have no fuel for the campstoves because we dumped them out to move. Jeff cooked on the bbq a couple times yesterday. We lit the house with candles last night and went to sleep early. The phone still has service. Even if we had been smart enough to put the solar yard lights outside yesterday we could have had them inside last night but we cleaned the yard up and put everything away on Saturday before the storm.

This morning it was really frosty outside and I slipped on the deck and went way way up in the air and then came down down down crashed onto the deck on my ass and back. I have a very sore tailbone. My wrist is sore too. Guess I’ll remember next time how slippery the frost is on the deck.

K, back to work, more updates later.

Latest on Noel

Lightning and thunder have showed up in the last few minutes. We’ve had a few strong gusts, but nothing too massive yet. Steady rain.

Power is still on (obviously). The storm centre is still south of Nova Scotia quite a bit.

UPDATE:
10:15 pm ADST – The Satellite TV has gone out a couple times and now the Satellite internet is having a hard time staying connected for more than a couple minutes at a time. CTV is showing a report that our premier has told no one in the province to go outside! I get all jittery and excited when a storm is coming. I’m tired, but if I go to bed, I’ll miss it! We’ll see if the power stays on. I might have a hard time staying up with no power. I’ll update again later if I can.

Thought I got a photo of a bald eagle

Dad has never seen a bald eagle and we see them all the time so today we made a special trip to try to find some for him.

We took the camera out towards Cape Breton where there is a river that crosses the Trans-Canada highway.

At first we didn’t see any, but then from far far away I saw one on top of a spruce tree.

We were more than a kilometre away, but I took a picture zoomed in all the way with the optical zoom, and then all the way with the digital zoom.

Then I got home and realized it wasn’t even a bald eagle. Just a big bird!

Not a bald eagle

Not a bald eagle

Sorry Dad, we’ll try again!

Got the Dress

I picked up my wedding dress today in New Glasgow. Of course it wasn’t a quick and easy pick up. Although I had placed a hold on the package last night so I could pick it up, they still sent it out in the truck for delivery. So I got there after 5 and had to wait around (I went to Walmart for a bit) until 6:20 when the truck came back and then I got to drive the hour home in the dark.

I won’t even dwell on the fact UPS thinks New Glasgow is spelled New Glasglow and they have it in New Brunswick instead of Nova Scotia. Or the fact that the place I had to pick this up at had 2 business names, 2 street names, and was in the country.

Any hooooooooooo,

Hurricane Noel is rolling in tomorrow. We are supposed to expect wind gusts of 120km/hr inland. I bought a case of water in case the power goes out and we can’t draw water from the well without power. Forgot about the bottle deposit, so when you buy a 30 bottle case of water out here, you pay an extra $3. Although I love Nova Scotia, it certainly isn’t a cheaper place to live (and the wages are way smaller). Gas was 111.9 today! Wanna hear about how Bell Aliant sent us a $1207.80 phone bill? They have admitted it isn’t accurate but no one at Aliant seems to know how to fix it.

In the morning we have to get up and put away the patio furniture and everything else outside that is going to disappear with hurricane wind gusts! I’m kinda excited to see what this will be like. We’re going to go into town first thing in the morning and pick up a few more supplies and some wood working stuff to finish off the bookcases.

I’m expecting we won’t have much of an internet connection over the weekend. Satellite internet and heavy rain don’t jive. 40-70mm of rain are predicted the last time I checked.

By the way, the wedding dress is the most gorgeous wedding dress I’ve ever seen and I don’t think I’ll need any major alternations, if any. It fits well. The wedding RSVP’s are coming in fast and furious. It’s like Christmas card season having all these envelopes to open! So far we haven’t had one person decline (except for Uncle Bernie’s practical joke).

UPS = Criminal Organization

Yes, you heard me. UPS and their “brokerage fees” are criminal.

These >:XX are holding me hostage. My wedding dress and accessories has arrived from the U.S. however before I can pick them up, I owe UPS $286.71. That is 39% of my total order. For WHAT???? >:XX criminals.

Their customer service rep on the phone said that there is only duty charged on ground shipping. If I had shipped it by AIR it would have been much cheaper. According to her, that is because if you ship by ground, then they have to cross the border where customs is and pay duty. However, they FLY over the border so there are no customs. I’m not kidding.

Oh! Not to forget in this rant, I have to drive all the way to New Glasgow tomorrow after work to pick it up. They aren’t open on weekends.
