Knives are sharp

Ahh another Sunday evening. I slept through the afternoon. I tried to watch the closing ceremonies, I really did, but zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz….. In my defense, I did get up at 4am to drive J. to the airport. (Okay so I did go back to sleep from 6 until 8 but still). J. is gone for two weeks!! Hopefully I’ll make good use of all the extra time I’ll have.

I just found a huge chunk of skin sliced on my finger. I made a salad for dinner, and as I was chopping veggies to put in it, I had a close call and almost sliced my finger with one of my sharp new big knives I received as a Christmas gift. Now I have just realized that it wasn’t a close call, I actually sliced almost completely off a big chunk of the side of my finger tip, only it didn’t bleed. Cool. Don’t try this at home kiddos.

I was looking through old mementos a couple days ago, including my school book. Did you know, that when I started kindergarten, I weighed 35 lbs, and Monty is already heavier than that?? Wild, eh? He did well at our retriever club practice this morning. There is another puppy that is two weeks older. Monty has caught up and is slightly taller I think than this other pup now. One of the guys thought Monty was about 4 inches bigger than last week.

I gave Monty a bath yesterday. He did okay in the tub, but he really isn’t fond of the blowdryer!

Still waiting for my slacker brother to update his blog and tell the tales of his recent trip to L.A. and Vegas! Apparently they were in the audience at the Price is Right! I’ve always wanted to go see that show be taped. I’m jealous!

UPDATE: Monty now has two bloody and loose upper molars! He’s chewing on a rawhide and getting it very bloody! It’s neat watching his adult teeth grow in!

Monty – 4 Months Old Photos

Monty is growing fast! He’s over 35 pounds already!

Here are 3 new photos I took of him this afternoon in the backyard. They really show that groove in the middle of face, eh? Winger and Surf didn’t have that – it must come from his mom’s side of the family. That one photo would have been awesome if his ear wasn’t inside out!!

A Woo Hoo to Thunder Bay’s Council

Two thumbs up to Thunder Bay’s city council that turned down the latest proposal which would have seen 60 acres of Lakehead University land developed to build a new high school on the corner of Oliver Road and Golf Links. This would have resulted in the loss of the woodlands behind the student residences. That would be a HUGE loss to the draw on the campus!

They had a big scheme proposed – a three way land swap between the Golf Course, Lakehead University, and the public school board. They are closing several high schools and want to build a new one at this corner, so it is close to the University and the Hospital. Why? I have no idea – they thought they would develop cross programs.

Hundreds of Lakehead University students, and other interested groups swarmed their council meeting, so many that they had to put them in other rooms. They were concerned about the loss of this wooded land, and the environmental impact that would be experienced. Not to mention that the high school students would all have to be bused there, and high school students don’t belong on a University campus.

Living in Sault Ste. Marie right now, where we have a city council that makes the wrong decision every time, it is comforting to hear that Thunder Bay’s council still has some common sense.

Unfortately, Fred Gilbert, LU’s president, mentioned an appeal to the Ontario Municipal Board. It’s too bad he doesn’t give any credit to the voices of his students.

I was dead

You know, I heard it was impossible to dream of being dead. Or maybe just dream of dying. Anyway last night in my dream, I was not only dead, but I was a ghost and was making my rounds visiting everyone.

Some people could see me and some couldn’t. Remarkably, no one was freaked out that this transparent Lisa was coming up to them, or appearing in their house, or waking them up, and they each had nice long conversations with me.

I hope this dream wasn’t foreshadowing anything. If I croak today, look forward to me visiting you, wah ha ha ha ha. (that was my spooky laugh).

I can afford a Honda Element now!!

I can afford a Honda Element now!!

Well sort of!

I was talking to Monty’s breeders last night and they said that a man from Korea wants a puppy out of Bumper (Monty’s mom) and is willing to pay $25,000 for one. So they presented me with the offer.

Mmmmmm, that’s a lot of money.

One of the breeders then told me about being at a dog show and a man from Korea fell in love with Dakota (Monty’s dad). He started his offer at 5K. Joanne refused. The man kept on going up, and eventually ended up following her right into her hotel room! and made his final offer of $50K. She said no way.

Of course I’m not going to sell Monty. Nice to know that he is worth $25K though. Think the bank will list him as collateral for a vehicle loan?
:-)

Happy Birthday Brian!

Happy Birthday to Brian, where ever he may be today! Las Vegas I hear, or maybe L.A. On vacation. Is that guy ever not on vacation? Once again he’s grabbed the number I left behind, so Happy 29th bro.

I trust everyone had a Happy Valentine’s day with their loved one, friends, family, or pet? Monty and I had a good snuggle for Valentine’s Day as we watched Gilmore Girls in bed. Yesterday was his 4 month birthday! That was the first time that he stayed in one spot long enough (yes I bribed him with his lion, rawhide, and nylabone, but he still stayed beside me on the bed for almost a full hour!).

The gas station man gave me a free Canadian Olympic flag this morning for my truck window. So Go Canada Go! 6-2 at the end of the 2nd period. I have always made fun of the fools with flags clamped to their windows, but I guess since it was free, and it’s Flag Day, and the Olympics are fun, I’ll join your silly clan for a day or so.

Monty, J., and I went to our private obedience lesson last night. It was supposed to be an hour but lasted almost 2 hours! I think we all learned a lot. It was all outside in the snow. We learned how to teach Monty not to pull on the leash or jump on people. We learned how to teach heel, controlled walks, hikes off leash, how to teach him that we are his ‘pack’ and not to run off in the woods, some retrieves, sits, downs, how to teach stay. Whew! We were all tired and sore afterwards! Monty’s brain was just mush and he slept the rest of the evening away!

For the first few minutes with the trainer, I thought she was a crazy person who was going to hurt my dog. I was trying to catch J.’s eye because I wanted to grab my baby puppy and run out of there! She was jerking him all over, kneeing him, knocking him on the floor. But after that it all worked out and I didn’t want to run away anymore. She didn’t ever use the word “no”. She just taught him what he should want to be doing by positive reinforcement, and if he was pulling he’d get a quick jerk back, or if he jumped on someone he’d be called in the other direction before hand and rewarded.

In a couple of weeks she is hoping to start up a Wed. evening class – $100 for 8 weeks – that is a reasonable price so we’ll go!

Have a lovely day! Get it, LOVEly ? hehe.

Valentine’s Day

Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day!

I just heard the cutest thing on the radio. You can call up your local Singing Valentines chapter and they will send 4 men bearing flowers to your loved one’s workplace to sing a couple lovesongs in barbershop quartet fashion.

I checked out their website, and unfortunately there are no chapters here, but I was surprised that prices start as only $35 for two songs, a rose, a card, and perhaps a box of chocolates.

So I decided to promote them with no benefit to myself, here is their link. Someone romantic out there outta try it out and let me know how it went!

Monty’s Going to School

Monty has a private obedience lesson tonight after work! Or is that.. I have a private obedience lesson with Monty after work. hehe

I want to compete with Monty in a few things, like obedience trials for sure (remember that Winger was able to earn his CD (Companion Dog) title, but I couldn’t go further in obedience with him because he had hip displasia and couldn’t do the jumping that was required).

I hope that this 1hr+ private lesson will get us headed in the right direction. After we take this private lesson we’ll be allowed into this instructor’s classes when the next group starts in a few weeks. She’s been training for 20+ years and has many titles on her dogs. I hope her training style will jive with mine.

I think Monty is doing really well. He’s been out twice now to meet with the retriever club guys. He has the retrieving instinct, that is for sure!

I haven’t formally taught him “Stay” yet. I’m sure he’ll learn that later today! His sit and down and come are really good, unless he’s hyper outside and is trying to get me to chase him instead of being a good puppy and just coming inside when I call him.

He’s such a fun puppy (except when I’m in shoes with no socks and trying to get him to come back inside and it’s snowing and I have to chase him around his kennel run getting snow in my shoes). You’ll never believe how big he is when you see him next! He’s nice and slim too, unlike the other lab puppy in our retriever club who’s almost the same age and is sooo much wider.

J. is coming tonight too so he can learn how to train a pup too (and remember all the things I’m told so I don’t forget) (and listen to the lesson first hand so he doesn’t misbelieve me later). I also hope to start going to conformation classes so I can learn how to handle him in a dog show ring.

New Website

I put a few more finishing touches on a new site between naps today.

http://StayInOrGetOut.com

It’s a website where people can sign up with a nickname, share their relationship situation, and other members get to vote if they should Stay In their relationship or GET OUT!

It didn’t take long to build – it’s mostly recycled code from my other sites.

I am unsure if I’m going to market this one or finish it up and sell it. Time will tell. In the meantime, share your relationship there and let us vote!!
