Better than Winning the Lottery

Better than winning the lottery, I got my dog back today.

Last night, Winger, my 11.5 year old Golden Retriever had to have emergency surgery. He has had this large lump on his head for quite some time, but last night it started bleeding and wouldn’t stop.

We went to the emergency vet. He wasn’t able to stop the bleeding either, so surgery was our only option to stop the bleeding. Anaesthetic is risky for an older dog, so needless to say, saying good-bye to him when I left him at the vets left me in tears. Driving home bawling, and covered in blood.. Probably didn’t look so good!

I was able to pick up Winger this morning and he is doing really well. He has an incision on the back of his head – close to 4 inches long. It is stitched up internally, and externally.

If you would like to see his stitches, look at these photos:

We just went to the pet store. I was wondering if Winger was going to need a cone for head to protect his stitches, and he answered my question by scratching his head. So now he is a cone head!

Took Myself Out for Dinner

It was a beautiful day today. Sat in the sun with a tank top on for 30 minutes. Got nicely burned. Funny how when areas of your skin see sun for the first time in a couple years, they have a tendancy to fry. At least I didn’t linger in the sun for too long.

Tried a new vodka cooler today – Seagram’s Wildberry Cream Swirl. Wow! I had to stop myself, drank two in a flash, they are sooo yummy. I recently rediscovered vodka coolers. I overdid Vodka won night in University, and would promptly vomit every time I tried to drink it after that. I guess ten years have cured that, because I seem to be good to go!

I watched The Notebook again today. I’ve seen the movie and read the book before, still cried as much as the other 2 times. Love the story though. The first time I saw it in the theatre and I cried my eyes out, continued to cry on the way home, right into a RIDE program! I don’t know why my wet red eyes didn’t earn me a breathalyzer test!

I did a nice thing for a colleague today, allowing him to use my scanner, and he insisted on paying me $20. After a day in the sun, and the bit of drinking, I had a ravenous hunger on, so I decided to take myself out for dinner.

Eating out in a restaurant by one’s self is a brave thing to do. Not everyone has the ability (it’s spelled m-o-m). I tossed around a few ideas in my head, but settled on the deluxe pizza I tried with Dad at Presto’s. YUM YUM. Even though the mushrooms are canned (what is WITH this town), they put a thick coating of toppings on.

The trick to eating out by one’s self, is figuring out how to pass the time. Do you bring a book? Keep the menu to read? This was a family restaurant so there wasn’t any newspapers. Do you become engrossed in the weave of the table cloth? Balance your cheque book? Or do what I did and just eavesdrop on the action of the place. Watching the people come and go, listening to the loud race from the tv in the kitchen, listening to the waitresses banter, listening to how sore the navel of one of the waitress’ was from her recent piercing, listening to the delivery orders come in, the repetition of the evening’s dinner specials… Beats the hell out of a drive thru take-out :-)

Canadian Carver Trip

Had a nice drive today. Beautiful weather – low 20′s, no humidity. Just beautiful.

Maple Leaf

Went up to the Canadian Carver near Batchewana. It’s a couple nice gift shops, full of native arts and crafts. We took a nice drive on a back road too, got out and walked down to the river. Got our sandals soaked. Nothing like a sandal full of mud!

Batchawana River

I talked to one of the ladies working at the Canadian Carver for a bit. She’s from Southern Ontario and seemed to be going right squirrelly up in the middle of no where. She said she’d been back to S. Ontario three times this month already! She misses all the roads – finds it weird that there is only one road up here :-)

It’s Bound to Happen..

PaydayReally, it’s just meant to be!

I’ve played the new Payday lottery since the beginning!! (So, like, 4 weeks now) I’ve won every week!! Twice I won $2, and twice I won a free ticket ($3). Not bad eh?

I love this lottery. You only need to match 4 numbers. And the odds are just in my favour. I mean the odds of winning the grand prize, of $1000 a week for LIFE, is only 1 in 1,353,275. So really, if I play every week for 1,353,275 weeks, odds are, that I will win! YEAH!

The catch, or so the rumour has it, is that this is an annuity prize, so you have to pay tax on it, but it’s still more than my day job brings in!

So, please, don’t play, save all the winning numbers for me, and wish me luck!

:-)

Skunk Breath

And in this morning’s news…

“46-year-old Kenneth A. Kassab of the Michigan Sault was picked up early Tuesday morning.

Kassab, who appeared to be in a state of less-than-total sobriety, was found wandering in the 300 block of Elm Street, carrying around a dead skunk.

According to the newspaper, Kassab had been trying to resuscitate the smelly critter, which had been fatally struck by a vehicle.”

::And here is a good one for those who are afraid of going to the dentist. Imagine this!!

There was a massive power outage in Thunder Bay, Ontario yesterday afternoon.

The problem cut off electricity to homes, offices, and street lights for about fourty minutes just after three o’clock in the afternoon. This caused major headaches for everyone but the lights going out can sometimes be more scary for some people than for others. Several dentists at Grandview Family Dental had to continue procedures using flashlights.

Yowzsers!!

::Tree-planting women are tough I tell ya!!! A planter near Upsula, Ontario fought off a bear, and then shook off the injuries and didn’t want medical attention!

“The attack occurred on Peter Finger Road, 15 km North of Upsala. A 25 year old Thunder Bay woman, who was tree planting in the area, was walking down a gravel road when she saw a black bear about 15 yards from her. According to O.P.P Constable Tim Buckland, the bear began snorting and scratching in the dirt and then charged at the victim, knocking her to the ground. Buckland says she continued to fight the bear through multiple attacks.

The woman was bruised and visibly shaken but did not seek medical attention. The MNR is continuing to investigate.”

Good thing I had my furr-ocious Golden Retriever Winger with me when I tree-planted! I’m sure he scared away all the bears!

Woo Wee! Chilly Morning!

Tooth chattering morning! Had to roll under an extra layer of blankets and sleep a little longer! HA I can always find an excuse to do that. hehe

I’ve been listening to Alanis’s newly released album – well it’s new in the respect that it’s newly recorded, but it’s the same set of songs that she struck it big with 10 or so years ago – Jagged Little Pill. She has redone the songs acoustically and I’m really quite enjoying it. I get a kick out of her “hoser” accent. Seriously – she really pronounces her r’s hard in some places. The album’s had it’s own publicity stunt – she’s released it through Starbucks for the first 6 weeks only, which has outraged CD stores enough for some of them to remove all her CD’s from their stores. Seriously, it worked it’s magic. I would never have known this CD was released if it hadn’t been in the news so much.

Oh, and P.S. I don’t have a Starbucks, so I was forced to find it another way :-)

Trip to Gaylord, Michigan

We took a trip last Saturday down to Gaylord, Michigan. Jay’s Sporting Goods was having a sale, and I’m always up for an adventure! I bought a nice sweatshirt and a fleece jacket. LOVED the store – could have spent another hour in there. There is something for everyone! Lot of giftware, women’s clothes too. Here’s a couple photos of the Mackinac Bridge. They were repainting it, so we were restricted to driving on the middle – on that metal mesh that feels like you are driving on slick ice. Owwwee I don’t like that stuff.

Lions Save Girl from Marriage

well not just marriage.. but a continual beating.

http://breakingnews.iol.ie/news/story.asp?j=146961666&p=y4696z37z

It seems in Ethiopia, more than 70% of marriages are by abduction! This poor 12 year old girl was abducted and was beaten repeatly for seven days. But then, a group of LIONS scared off her abductors and stood on guard over her until she was rescued!

Amazing story. Too bad the lions weren’t hungrier for some adult male flesh.

“Died of playing computer games” they say

Russian Schoolboy Dies After 12 Hours of Computer Gaming: http://www.mosnews.com/news/2005/06/21/deadboy.shtml

“They believe that the addiction to computer games did not let the boy to stop shooting at the virtual monsters even when he felt bad. “He was dying but could not tear himself from the game,” he said.”

Sad.

As much as I love computers, and programming, and surfing, I think we’d all be better off playing outside, especially kids.

Things you Can’t buy No-Name

Seriously, there are just some things you can’t.. you just shouldn’t.. buy no-name.

I’m composing a list.

My latest discovery: Just because the giant box of generic Cheerios are only $2, don’t buy them!! They start to disintegrate as soon as the milk hits! EWWWW At least I had blueberries and sliced up strawberries in there to disguise the taste and texture!

Okay here’s my list, feel free to add to it:

Cheerios
Saran Wrap
Shaving Cream
Toilet paper
